Among Vietnam's shellfish products, clams are the main export product group, accounting for over 52% of total export turnover.
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in August 2024 alone, export Vietnam's clam exports reached nearly 10 million USD, up 29% over the same period in 2023. Accumulated in the first 8 months of 2024, the export turnover of the product group reached more than 65 million USD, up 19%.
Vietnam has over 41,500 hectares of mollusc farming (mainly shellfish) with an output of about 265,000 tons/year, of which clams reach 179,000 tons/year. This industry value chain is creating jobs for about 200,000 workers. However, climate change and saline intrusion are seriously affecting output, especially clams.
Currently, the EU is the largest importer of Vietnamese clam products. Spain and Italy are the two largest importers in this market bloc and also the two largest single importers of Vietnam, with proportions of 26% and 21% respectively. Currently, exports to these two markets are higher than the same period last year. However, exports to Italy are unstable and tend to decrease in August.
China, Vietnam's third largest clam import market, is also increasing its imports sharply. Vietnam's clam exports to this market have continuously increased at a triple-digit rate in recent months. By the end of August 2024, clam exports to China reached nearly 11 million USD, up 215% over the same period.
According to businesses, the increasing demand for clams and mussels in the world is creating momentum for the export of this product. Therefore, Vietnam's clam exports are expected to continue to grow until the end of the year.
