Vietnamese opera is being introduced in Busan (South Korea) within the framework of the exhibition “Alternative Identities: Masks of ASEAN & Korea” until July 23.

This exhibition is organized by ICHCAP-UNESCO and KF ACH to introduce intangible cultural heritage related to masks/face painting from Korea and 10 Southeast Asian countries through more than 200 masks, costumes and multimedia content (articles, images, videos).
It is known that the article, pictures and videos about the models of characters in Vietnamese Hat Boi art were made by Hieu Van Ngu.
Established in 2020, Hieu Van Ngu - Cultura Fish is a project to evoke the beauty of Vietnamese art in the hearts of young audiences through storytelling, workshops, introductory appreciation courses and applied products.
Hieu Van Ngu is a group of friends from many different fields but share the same love for Vietnamese art materials: Luc Pham Quynh Nhi, Ha Thuc Duc Tung, Vuong Hoai Lam, Josh Trombley, Ta Ngoc Uyen Phuong, Nguyen Le Thanh Thao, Ha Hoang Minh Trang, Tran Thi Minh Thuy...
In the information shared on the official page, Hieu Van Ngu said that, in addition to the content shown, the organizing committee of ICHCAP-UNESCO and KF ACH also carefully used to he to mold the opera characters based on the prototypes made by actors from the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House in the previous archival project with Hieu Van Ngu.
In addition, the exhibition's Organizing Committee also made a miniature model of the Hat Boi stage based on the prototype of the Ngoc Khanh Hat Boi - Tuong Co Art Troupe that Hieu Van Ngu introduced in the trailer of the project "Hat Boi 101".

"Alternative Identities: Masks of ASEAN & Korea" is co-organized by ICHCAP-UNESCO (International Information and Networking Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage in Asia and the Pacific under UNESCO) and Korea Foundation ASEAN Culture House (Southeast Asian Cultural Research Center in Korea (ACH) from April 26 to July 23. The exhibition will then continue in Andong and Seoul from September 2023. The exhibition consists of 5 parts: Introducing the origin of masks, introducing the forms of religious practices (shamanism) and entertainment using masks; Southeast Asian legends and masks through folk tales; Introducing Vietnamese hát bội as a form of performance using face painting techniques (close to masks); Introducing Philippine masks appearing in festivals and contemporary works; Introducing Korean Talchum art. |
