Singer Tuan Phong’s wife said he suffered a stroke during Covid-19. The after-effects affected his brain, causing his language ability to decline. He then fell, broke three ribs, and was bedridden. He passed away on November 10 after a long illness.
The artist's funeral will be held at Thong Nhat Hospital Funeral Home (Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City). The memorial service will take place on the morning of November 13, followed by cremation at Binh Hung Hoa.
The news has left many of his colleagues and students in mourning. Artist Ta Minh Tam, former Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music, said that over the years, the singer's health had declined due to many underlying diseases. According to Ta Minh Tam, Tuan Phong was one of the outstanding lyrical and revolutionary singers of the 1980s and 1990s.
"His high-pitched voice and refined technique helped him succeed in love songs, especially the compositions of musician Phan Huynh Dieu. He lived in harmony with his colleagues and was loved by his juniors and students because he always supported them," said Ta Minh Tam.
Singer Tuan Phong was born in Hanoi, the eldest of five siblings. From a young age, he inherited his love of art and literature from his father, who worked at the National Library of Vietnam.
In the 1990s, he made his mark with a series of lyrical songs such as Late Autumn Love Poetry, Autumn Sounds, Where is that person now, and Afternoon Tuong Tu. One of the songs that many people remember when talking about him is Thuyen va bien (Boat and the Sea) (music: Phan Huynh Dieu, poetry: Xuan Quynh).
During his lifetime, the musician assessed that Tuan Phong performed his compositions most successfully. "If Pham Duy has Thai Thanh, Trinh Cong Son has Khanh Ly, I have Tuan Phong", Phan Huynh Dieu once said.
The artist was once Deputy Head of the Faculty - vocal lecturer, Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music, and was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist in 1996. He also writes poetry, comments, and is a familiar voice reading poetry on Ho Chi Minh City Television.
