Contemporary artist Le Quang Dinh

The passing of artist Le Quang Dinh has shocked and saddened his friends and colleagues. He has made many important contributions to Vietnamese contemporary art.

Le Quang Dinh is devoted to contemporary art.

Le Quang Dinh was born in 1968 in Ha Tien. At the age of 10, he moved to the United States with his family. He graduated from the University of California with a major in photography, then continued his studies in visual arts in New York.

He pursued an artistic career from a very young age in the US. In 1993, he returned to Vietnam to live and work. He has many works that have resonated domestically and internationally, such as: Pishkun East Sea (2009) - a 3D animation recreating the scene of a helicopter crash when the US army fled Saigon in fear.

Or The Farmers and the Helicopters - an installation consisting of a three-channel video and a helicopter hand-assembled from scrap by farmer Le Van Danh and self-taught mechanic Tran Quoc Hai...

The image of a helicopter that was once a means of spreading evil during the resistance war, is now being made by farmers into a tool to support agriculture.

The work was made in the form of a documentary combined with installation art and displayed at the Moma Museum (New York), contributing to creating the impression of artist Le Quang Dinh with international friends.

In addition to having more than 30 solo exhibitions in many countries, Mr. Dinh is also the co-founder of two centers: the Vietnam Art Organization in Los Angeles and San Art, the first independent and non-profit art gallery in Ho Chi Minh City.

With his important contributions, Le Quang Dinh received the Prince Claus Foundation award presented by the Dutch Royal Family on August 8, 2011.

Old farmer in the art field

Journalist Nguyen My Linh sadly wrote on her personal page: "The passing of Mr. Le Quang Dinh is truly a great loss to Vietnamese art.

I know many talented people, but few are as talented, calm, kind, and do many good things for others as well as for the development of contemporary Vietnamese art with a persistent, humble, and generous attitude like Mr. Dinh.

Mr. Dinh's exhibition in Paris also tried to introduce more works by Vietnamese artists of the resistance generation. He said it would be a pity if that generation did not have the opportunity to be introduced anywhere, so he tried to do so.

She still remembers the first time she met Mr. Dinh. "At that time, he had just returned to Vietnam, using his personal money to support San Art and turn it into a new place for art exchange. He looked like a gentle old farmer...

Well, that's right, an old farmer in the field of art" - journalist My Linh wrote.

Talking to Tuoi Tre Online , artist Pham Huy Thong shared that although he has not had the opportunity to work directly with artist Le Quang Dinh, he has always followed his artistic path and feels great admiration for that journey.

"His works have depth, thoughtfulness and leave a mark for future generations to learn from. When he returned to Vietnam, he also contributed a lot to Vietnamese art. Two days ago, I still saw him posting on Facebook, but now that he has passed away suddenly, I feel very shocked," artist Huy Thong expressed.
