Every time the weather is hot, people in the highlands of Nghe An choose to "put on lamps" to plant rice at night to avoid the sun, instead of planting during the day like before.
This is considered one of the effective solutions chosen by most highland farmers as a dynamic and creative response to the severe drought situation "like burning" on a large scale in recent times. With this method, not only does it help to keep up with the season, avoid the sun but also helps the rice grow better.
Ms. Lo Thi Huong, in Lung village, Tam Thai commune, Tuong Duong district, said: "In the past few days, the hot weather has been prolonged, maintaining high temperatures. In order to be on time for the harvest, not only our family but many other families in the village have gone to the fields at night to plant rice. During the day, we take advantage of the time to pull up seedlings, have dinner early in the afternoon, and start planting at around 5 p.m. and return home around 10-11 p.m."
Not far from Ms. Huong’s family’s field is Ms. Luong Thi Oanh’s family’s field. Ms. Oanh shared: “With the hot weather like the past few days, if we go to plant rice during the day, we can only plant for about 2 hours before having to go home.
Because of the sun and heat, my family chose to plant at night, because the weather is much cooler at this time, so the work efficiency is also higher. Not only that, it also helps the rice grow better and ensures health."
“Because of the shortage of labor as young people go to the North and South to work for companies, while the seasonal schedule is tight, many families have had to hire more workers. Many people take advantage of their finished farm work to work as hired laborers to earn extra income,” Ms. Oanh added.
Mr. Quang Van Thuy, in Lung village, Tam Thai commune, confided that when it started to get dark, his family went to the fields and rested around 11pm. During harvest time, the weather was hot and sunny, so the daily routine was disrupted.
Not only his family, but most farmers in the village and commune choose to plant at night to avoid the heat. Planting at night helps to avoid the heat, and the water comes in time, the seedlings also grow better, take root faster and are fresher, because the water and mud have cooled down....
It is known that not only farmers in Tam Thai commune but also many farmers in other localities in Tuong Duong district also "put on lights" at night to go to the fields to plant rice and pull out seedlings, such as in Thach Giam town, Tam Dinh commune, Tam Quang...
With the positive and proactive spirit of the highland farmers, this year's summer-autumn crop of Tuong Duong district farmers will ensure production according to plan, creating the premise for a bumper crop.
