A 30-year-old woman went to see a doctor for infertility because she had been married for many years but could not have children. After examination, Dr. Phan Chi Thanh, Chief of Office of the Training and Guidance Center, Central Obstetrics Hospital, determined that the cause was polycystic ovary syndrome.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder in women that causes the body to have too much male sex hormone (androgen hormone), which prevents eggs from developing, the ovaries have many small cysts and prevents ovulation.
"This is one of the leading causes of infertility in women. In addition to being overweight and obese, women with polycystic ovary syndrome also have typical symptoms such as: menstrual disorders, uncontrolled weight gain, skin problems such as acne, mood swings, hair loss, and abnormal hair growth," said Dr. Thanh.

Notably, according to this expert, the condition of polycystic ovaries is currently getting younger.
"According to our actual records, up to 20% of young women coming for examination have polycystic ovaries," said Dr. Thanh.
One of the main causes of this disease in young people, according to Dr. Thanh, comes from an unhealthy diet.
"The diet of many young people today is low in vegetables and high in refined products, starches and fats. In addition, we must mention the sedentary lifestyle. This type of diet is often maintained from childhood and into adulthood, gradually causing polycystic ovaries," Dr. Thanh analyzed.
Dr. Thanh analyzed that for people with polycystic ovary syndrome, if they eat a lot, they will become overweight, obese or have diabetes, which will make the polycystic ovary syndrome worse.
On the contrary, if you control your diet and exercise scientifically to help your ovaries function well, this condition will regress.
"Many cases of polycystic ovary syndrome that we receive only lose weight and have a scientific lifestyle, then their periods return to normal and they can conceive naturally," said Dr. Thanh.
On the contrary, many women pursuing perfect beauty have very extreme weight loss methods.
"Many women are obsessed with unreasonable body beauty standards: wasp waist, overly plump breasts and buttocks.
Meanwhile, all actors and models when appearing in public always apply makeup very carefully along with photo editing techniques to help create images that are completely different from real life," Dr. Thanh analyzed.
He also emphasized that women should not expect too much from a perfect appearance or set standards like images on social networks.
According to this expert, excessive dieting and malnutrition not only affect general health but also cause ovarian dysfunction.
Eating less nutrient-rich foods, especially protein and healthy fats, can cause ovarian dysfunction and affect the menstrual cycle. This can reduce the amount of reproductive hormones in the body and cause menstrual disorders, reducing the ability to conceive.
"When applying a diet that is too strict, the nutrients from this already meager diet when entering the body will be prioritized for the most essential life functions, leading to a lack of nutrients to nourish the ovaries.
"If the ovaries are not well nourished for a long time, their degeneration will accelerate," Dr. Thanh emphasized.
