US President Donald Trump's new tax policies could cost US semiconductor manufacturers more than $1 billion a year.
The data was released based on calculations by the semiconductor industry during discussions with officials and lawmakers in Washington last week.
The three largest chip equipment manufacturers in the US, Applied Materials, Lam Research and KLA, could lose about $350 million each within a year due to these tariffs.
Some smaller rivals like Onto Innovation could also incur additional costs of tens of millions of dollars.
This is the first time the billion-dollar loss to the semiconductor industry has been revealed, following days of talks between business leaders and US officials.
These companies make some of the world's most sought-after chipmaking equipment, whose construction requires thousands of specialized components.
US semiconductor manufacturers have already lost billions of dollars in revenue as the Biden administration imposed a series of export controls aimed at preventing the transfer of advanced chip manufacturing equipment to foreign countries.
The Trump administration is currently holding off on implementing reciprocal tariffs announced in early April.
However, to boost domestic production, the White House is considering imposing additional tariffs on the chip industry and launched an investigation into imports on April 14.
Lawmakers and government officials have been talking with chip industry leaders and representatives of the Semiconductor Manufacturing International (SEMI) trade group as part of an ongoing dialogue.
The preliminary estimate of $350 million in losses per company could still change as the Trump administration's tariffs take effect.
Detailed calculations are still difficult, because each chip manufacturing device has a series of components and the final tax framework is still unclear./.
