Airlines and airports are thirsty for high-quality technical personnel, creating great career opportunities. Graduates often have a starting salary of 15 million VND.
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), in the period 2015-2035, Vietnam is in the top 4 markets with the highest growth rate in air passenger traffic in the world. This opens up many job opportunities. However, the human resource supply for Vietnam's aviation industry currently only meets 40% of the demand.
After Covid-19, airlines are planning to rapidly expand their fleets, building dozens of hangars - aircraft maintenance workshops (each hangar has an area of about 1 hectare, requiring at least 300 employees) at Long Thanh airport. Currently, due to limited infrastructure and lack of human resources, most Vietnamese airlines have to take their aircraft abroad for maintenance.
To solve the problem of human resource shortage, some universities have opened training courses in Aeronautical Engineering such as Hanoi University of Science and Technology (USTH), Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Vietnam Aviation Academy. However, the training quota of each school is not much, only from 40 to 150 students per course.
Associate Professor Dr. Ngo Quang Minh, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Aviation, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that aviation engineering is a specialized and narrow field, which must meet the safety standards of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam; modern machinery and practice equipment are needed, so not many universities offer this field. For example, at USTH, to invest in a basic laboratory for practicing aviation engineering, the school had to invest about 1 million USD.
Curriculum
At Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the 100% English-taught program includes basic theoretical and practical content, focusing on aircraft and system maintenance, inspection and technical support, quality, aircraft condition and aviation operations.
Students can choose one of three majors. Among them, the major in Material Engineering has some typical subjects such as: flight operations; flight safety; flight surveillance; navigation and communication; air traffic management; project management; airline management.
The Maintenance Engineering major includes the following subjects: aerodynamics; flight mechanics and flight control; aviation structures; propulsion systems; aircraft design and maintenance. The Maintenance Engineering major with B1/B2 certificate (aircraft maintenance engineering certificate) includes: the Maintenance Engineering program content and an additional 1,329 hours of in-depth training on aircraft systems and maintenance practice according to the B1/B2 program.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology provides essential core subjects on the foundation of aeronautical engineering such as aerodynamics, flight mechanics and flight control, aeronautical structures, propulsion systems, aircraft design and maintenance.
The Aeronautical Engineering Department of Vietnam Aviation Academy equips students with knowledge and skills in operating, maintaining and repairing aircraft and equipment and systems on aircraft such as: airframe, engine, equipment and systems belonging to the mechanical and mechanical groups.
At Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the program also has core and specialized subjects, equipping students with knowledge of basic science, mechanical engineering, and aeronautical engineering, helping students have professional practice skills and the ability to apply knowledge to operate, maintain, design, and deploy systems and equipment related to aeronautical mechanics.
Training time and tuition
At Hanoi University of Science and Technology, students major in Operation Engineering and Maintenance Engineering for 3 years with 180 credits; tuition fee is 100 million VND per year.
Maintenance Engineering students who obtain B1/B2 certificates study for 3 years at the school with 180 credits and an additional 10 months of study and practice at the Aircraft Engineering Company Limited (VAECO). This is the only organization approved by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam to train and issue B1/B2 certificates in Vietnam. USTH is the only school that has a training cooperation agreement with VAECO. Tuition fee is 125 million VND.
At Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the bachelor's program lasts 4 years, the engineering program lasts 5 years, with tuition fees of 26-29 million VND for the next school year.
Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology offers 5-year training with tuition fees of about 30 million VND per year.
Vietnam Aviation Academy offers 5-year training with tuition of 25 million VND per year.
Career opportunities
Graduates of Aeronautical Engineering can take on many positions at airlines such as Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, Vietjet Air, HaiAu Aviation; domestic and international airports; other companies operating in the field of aircraft management, exploitation, maintenance; research, design and manufacturing companies.
In addition, students can become officers, researchers, lecturers at centers, institutes, universities, colleges in the field of Aviation Engineering and related specialized fields.
Students also have the opportunity to receive postgraduate scholarships from many prestigious universities around the world. For example, students of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology can continue to study the Master's program in International Air Transport Management (IATOM) at the school and the French National School of Civil Aviation (ENAC) to become senior managers of domestic and foreign airlines.
Income
Hanoi University of Science and Technology announced that 100% of students have jobs one year after graduation with a common salary of 10-15 million VND/month.
Sharing with VnExpress in May, Mr. Ta Minh Trong, Head of Flight Safety Standards Department, Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, said that personnel in the aviation engineering industry can receive a salary of 15-20 million VND per month with elementary level, doing simple jobs such as changing oil and aircraft tires.
For those with B1/B2 certificate and can sign confirmation after completing maintenance work, the salary can be up to 50 million VND or even higher.
