(CLO) A Russian delegation has arrived in Tehran to discuss and meet with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, as the two countries prepare to sign a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement.
Iran and Russia are working to set a date for signing the agreement, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on December 23, according to TASS news agency, adding that the agreement is expected to be signed during a visit between the two countries' leaders in January.
Iranian news agencies also reported that a Russian delegation met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran on Monday, as the two countries prepared to sign a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement.
The Russian delegation invited President Pezeshkian to visit Russia in early 2025, according to media reports. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei had earlier said the deal would be signed during a bilateral visit in January.
Baghaei said Tehran and Moscow could sign the deal in mid-January 2025. "This will be done in a bilateral meeting in the near future. God willing, the deal will be signed by the end of Dey (the tenth month of the Iranian calendar, corresponding to the period from December 21 to January 19)," Baghaei said at a press conference, broadcast live on SNN.

The comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between Russia and Iran is expected to cover areas such as defense cooperation, trade, energy and regional issues. Moscow and Tehran have been strengthening their closer ties since the Ukraine crisis.
On December 4, Russian President Vladimir Putin also said he expected a new basic agreement with Tehran to be signed during Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's upcoming visit to Russia.
However, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the specific date for the visit has not been set yet. However, Mr. Peskov affirmed that Moscow and Tehran do not intend to postpone the signing of the comprehensive strategic partnership agreement.
