According to RT news agency, on March 5, Director of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) - Mr. Yury Borisov said: "We are seriously considering with our Chinese colleagues the project of installing a nuclear power station on the surface of the Moon in the period 2033-2035".
According to Mr. Borisov, nuclear energy will be the solution to provide the necessary electricity for future settlements on the Moon because solar panels cannot produce enough electricity.
Robots will be used to install the nuclear reactor, the Roscosmos chief added, a process that is “very challenging” and needs to be carried out fully automatically, without human intervention.

According to Mr. Borisov, the technology needed to build a nuclear power plant on the Moon is almost ready, only the solution to cool the nuclear reactor has not been completed yet.
Roscosmos's leadership announced information about Russia and China considering jointly building a nuclear power plant on the Moon at a time when observers believe a modern-day space race is taking place between the United States and its allies on one side and Russia and China on the other.
China is developing its military capabilities in space at a “breathtaking” pace, the commander of the US Space Force, General Stephen Whiting, said. Meanwhile, China’s Defense Ministry warned that Washington was leading the militarization of space.
Last month, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner said Russia was seeking to deploy missile interceptors in space to enhance its anti-satellite capabilities. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Washington was using false statements to gain leverage in negotiations on limiting the deployment of weapons in space.
In his speech on March 5, Mr. Borisov also affirmed that Russia has no plans to deploy nuclear weapons in space.
