Russia believes that military threats from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) are steadily increasing as the military alliance seeks to expand its capabilities in the Black Sea and access the Caspian Sea region.

On November 26, TASS news agency reported that Director of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Alexander Bortnikov gave the above warning at the 20th Conference of Heads of Security and Intelligence Agencies of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries taking place in Moscow.

"The military threat from NATO is steadily growing. They are holding on to the borders of the Russian-Belarusian Union State, stepping up efforts to increase their presence in the Arctic and the Baltic Sea region, seeking to expand their combat, intelligence and logistics capabilities in the Black Sea, and seeking access to the Caspian Sea region," the FSB head explained.

In addition, some NATO countries "are actively adding fuel to the fire by supplying weapons to opposing sides in the CIS countries."

Stating that the US and its allies will continue to try to "openly interfere in CIS relations, hinder the integration process" and negatively affect the community's common efforts to ensure security and stability throughout the Commonwealth, the FSB head noted that the CIS "must be ready for any kind of provocation".

Regarding the new administration in the US, Mr. Bortnikov warned that the election of a new president "is unlikely to lead to fundamental changes in Washington's foreign policy."

Russian officials even warned that outgoing US President Joe Biden's team will seek to escalate the situation as much as possible in the Eurasian regions that Washington considers key, making it difficult for the next administration to address growing problems.

The US has not yet responded to the above statement by the Russian official.
