The ceremony held in the Arctic port city of Murmansk marked an important milestone in the development of the Russian Navy.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Putin stressed the importance of this event, with the Perm submarine being the sixth of the Yasen-M project to join the Russian Navy and set to begin combat duty next year. According to Russian news agencies, the technical specifications of this ship have some differences compared to previous models.

“Yasen-M class submarines are equipped with modern navigation, communications and hydroacoustic systems. They carry high-precision weapons and are equipped with robotic equipment. Perm is the first multipurpose submarine to carry Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles,” the leader said.

Zircon is a weapon with a range of 900 km and extremely high speed, making it difficult for the enemy to intercept. Previously, in his State of the Nation Address to the National Assembly in February 2019, President Putin affirmed that the Zircon missile is capable of attacking both land and sea targets at a distance of more than 1,000 km, at a speed of up to Mach 9 (9 times the speed of sound).

After the launching ceremony, President Putin also visited the Arkhangelsk submarine – a sister ship to the Perm – and inspected the Atomflot enterprise, the unit responsible for overseeing Russia's icebreaker projects.

At a meeting with the crew of the Arkhangelsk submarine, Mr. Putin affirmed: "For centuries, Russia has asserted its position as a powerful maritime nation. We will do everything to continue to maintain that."

The Russian leader pledged to continue building new ships and constantly improve the capabilities of surface ships and amphibious ships to meet modern standards, be combat-ready and be effective in the near future, emphasizing that: "These are strategic weapons, playing a pivotal role in ensuring our national security for decades to come."
