Ukraine signs security agreement with EU
The European Union (EU) and two member states, Lithuania and Estonia, signed security agreements with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the EU summit in Brussels (Belgium) on June 27, according to Reuters.
The agreement with the EU sets out the bloc's commitment to help Ukraine in nine areas of security and defense policy, including arms supplies, military training, defense industry cooperation and mine clearance, according to a draft of the agreement seen by Reuters.
The agreement with the EU, along with documents signed with Lithuania and Estonia, is intended to complement similar agreements already signed between Ukraine and its allies.
Countries that have previously signed security agreements with Ukraine include the United States, Britain, France and Germany. Officials say these security agreements are not the same as mutual defense treaties between NATO member states, but are commitments to provide Ukraine with weapons and other aid to enhance its security and deter any future aggression.
