* Russia pledged to “continue to develop” cooperation with North Korea , following reports that Pyongyang sent 1,500 troops to support Moscow’s special military operation, but has remained silent on the speculation.

Speaking to reporters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "North Korea is Russia's neighbor and close partner. We develop relations in all areas and that is our sovereign right. We will continue to further develop this cooperative relationship." (AFP)

* Turkey's leading opposition cleric Fethullah Gülen , who Ankara accused of being a terrorist for being behind the failed coup in the transcontinental country in 2016, has died in the US. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has officially confirmed this information.

The death of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's "arch-rival" is expected to have a major impact on the country's political situation as well as Ankara's relations with Washington. (AP)

* Moldova will hold the second round of its presidential election on November 3 after preliminary results from the October 20 vote showed that none of the 11 candidates running for office had won more than 50% of the vote.

According to preliminary results, incumbent Moldovan President Maia Sandu led in the first round of the election with about 35% of the vote and will face candidate Alexandr Stoianoglo, a former prosecutor backed by a pro-Russian group of voters, who won 30% of the vote, in the second round. (TASS)

* 50% of Moldovan voters want to join the European Union (EU), according to the results of 97.66% of the votes counted, published on the website of the Central Election Commission of Moldova. (Reuters)

* Indonesia has a new Foreign Minister, Mr. Sugiono , Vice President of the Gerindra Party. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has announced a new cabinet that he calls "red and white", consisting of 48 ministries and 5 ministerial-level agencies. (Jakarta Post)

* China called on Indonesia to build "high-level strategic trust" and carry out closer international coordination as Chinese Vice President Han Zheng attended the inauguration ceremony and met with new Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on October 20. (AFP)

* China has lodged a protest over the attack on its consulate in Myanmar's Mandalay city on October 18. China expressed its dissatisfaction and called on Myanmar to make every effort to apprehend the perpetrators. (Reuters)

* South Korea summoned the Russian ambassador in response to reports that North Korea has deployed troops to support Moscow in its military campaign in Ukraine. However, the embassy said that cooperation between Russia and North Korea is in line with international law and is not aimed at countering South Korea's security interests. (Yonhap, TASS)

* South Korea called for enhanced security cooperation with Britain " as trustworthy partners bound by shared values" to address common security challenges, including reports of North Korea deploying troops in Russia. (Yonhap)

* Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani traveled to Israel and Palestine to meet with the leaders of the host countries, reiterating Italy's commitment to peace, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages.

The head of Italy's foreign ministry stressed the country's support for the "Two Peoples - Two States" solution, mutual recognition for a stable and lasting peace, which has always been Rome's priority goal in the Middle East. (LUSA)

* Iran has complained to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about Israel's threats to attack the Islamic Republic's nuclear facilities. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi will visit Bahrain and Kuwait on October 21 as part of Tehran's efforts to ease regional tensions. (Reuters)

* The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted a drill in the northern city of Nahariyya, a few kilometers from the Lebanese border. The IDF did not provide information on whether the exercise was planned in advance. (Times of Israel)

* US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin arrived in Kiev on October 21, marking his fourth visit to Ukraine, to demonstrate that "Washington and the international community continue to stand with Ukraine." The visit will clarify Kiev's weapons needs and how the US will continue to support Ukraine in the coming year.

A senior source in the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said Austin's visit would be a "pause" to review US-Ukraine relations during the past two and a half years of war. (AFP)

* US special envoy Amos Hochstein arrived in Beirut to meet Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri. Berri has been tasked with negotiating on behalf of Hezbollah amid diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between the movement and Israel. (AFP)

* Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has canceled a trip to Russia to attend the BRICS summit, following his doctor's advice to temporarily avoid long-haul flights. Lula will attend the BRICS summit via video conference. (Reuters)
