In a statement released on September 18, the Russian Defense Ministry said Ukrainian forces had suffered more than 500 casualties across Kursk province in the previous 24 hours.
The Russian Defense Ministry said two German-made Leopard tanks, four Swedish-made CV-90 infantry fighting vehicles and dozens of other Ukrainian armored vehicles and military equipment were destroyed in 24 hours.
In a video posted on the Northern Wind Telegram channel on September 19, members of Russia's Northern Operations Forces were seen using multiple first-person unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to attack a Leopard 2 tank.
Russia shoots down Ukrainian Leopard tank in Kursk (Source: Telegram/RT).
Northern Wind, a channel that regularly posts footage and updates from the front lines, describes the tank as a Leopard 2A5, one of the most modern tanks in Ukraine's arsenal.
The first hit caused a large fire in the tank's turret, while a second UAV appeared to have grazed the Leopard's hull. Video captured by a drone shows the Ukrainian tank burning fiercely after the Russian attack.
According to experts, drones are considered the top "nemesis" of Ukrainian tanks, including Leopard.
In recent times, Russian UAVs have demonstrated incredible performance in destroying a wide range of targets from long distances, including main battle tanks, fighter jets parked in bases, artillery and air defense systems.
Ukrainian forces launched a large-scale cross-border offensive into Russia’s Kursk region early last month. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he intends to take control of as much of Russia’s territory as possible to strengthen Kiev’s position in any negotiations with Moscow.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Aleksandr Syrsky admitted that the Kursk operation was essentially a move to force Russia to withdraw its troops from the Donbass frontline in eastern Ukraine.
Russia claims the Ukrainian advance was soon stopped and Russian forces have since launched a counter-offensive to push Kiev forces back across the border.
According to the latest figures from the Russian Ministry of Defense on September 20, the Kursk campaign caused the Ukrainian army to lose 15,300 people, 124 tanks, 56 infantry fighting vehicles, 93 armored personnel carriers, 780 armored fighting vehicles, 471 vehicles, 115 artillery pieces, 28 multiple rocket launchers...
While fighting Ukrainian forces in Kursk, Russian forces continued to advance into Donbass and took control of villages in the area.
Ukraine continues to call on the West for more weapons to counter Russia on all fronts, especially attacks on Russian territory. However, the West remains divided on providing long-range weapons to Kiev.
