Speaking to reporters after the recent opening of the “5 years of ASEAN-Russia strategic partnership” event in Jakarta (Indonesia), Ambassador Evgeny Zagaynov affirmed that Russia and ASEAN “have great potential for cooperation in energy projects, in the context of increasing energy demand in Southeast Asia”.
According to the Russian diplomat, energy demand in the region will increase by 50% by 2050, so cooperation is very important.
The two sides can cooperate in a number of projects such as oil and natural gas production, clean technology related to coal and alternative energy sources, corresponding to the global need for sustainable energy solutions.
Russia has been a dialogue partner of ASEAN since 1996. In November 2018, the two sides agreed to upgrade the relationship to a strategic partnership.
Last July, the ASEAN and Russian Foreign Ministers adopted the “Joint Statement of the ASEAN and Russian Foreign Ministers on the occasion of the 5th Anniversary of the ASEAN-Russia Strategic Partnership”, which outlined priority areas of cooperation between the two sides in the coming years.
Priority areas include food security, disaster mitigation, environment, climate change and biodiversity, sustainable energy and energy security.
Ambassador Zagaynov said that Russia is ready to increase the supply of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to ASEAN countries, contributing to ensuring energy security for the region.
Currently, the Russian Energy Agency is actively cooperating with the ASEAN Energy Center in implementing a number of joint projects on energy and natural gas statistics.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Russia is the world's third largest oil producer after the US and Saudi Arabia.
