According to Reuters news agency, the Ukrainian Air Force said it shot down 52 out of 54 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched by Russia. Ukraine considered this an attack with a record number of suicide UAVs.
Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said it was the first deadly attack on Kiev in May and the 14th this month. Falling UAV debris killed a 41-year-old man.

The overnight attacks occurred on the last Sunday in May as the Ukrainian capital celebrated Kiev Day, the official anniversary of its founding 1,541 years ago. The day typically features street fairs, live concerts and special museum exhibitions. These events are also taking place this year, but on a smaller scale.
The Ukrainian Air Force said on Telegram that Russia had targeted important military infrastructure in the central regions of Ukraine and especially the Kiev region.
According to Serhiy Popko, head of Kiev's military administration, the Russian attack took place in several waves and the air warnings lasted more than five hours.
Several districts of Kiev were hit overnight. In the Holosiivskyi district in southwestern Kiev, falling debris set fire to a three-story warehouse, destroying about 1,000 square meters of buildings, according to Mayor Klitschko.
A fire broke out after debris from the drone hit a seven-story building in the city’s western Solomyanskyi district, a busy hub for rail and air traffic.
In the Pecherskyi district, a fire broke out on the roof of a nine-story building due to falling debris from a UAV, and in the Darnytskyi district, a shop was damaged.
Russia has not commented on the above UAV attack on Kiev.
As Ukraine prepares for a counterattack, Russia has stepped up its airstrikes after a nearly two-month lull, targeting mainly military sites and supply lines. Waves of attacks are occurring several times a week.
Meanwhile, on May 27, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Oleksiy Danilov, said that the counter-offensive to retake territory from Russia could begin "tomorrow, the day after tomorrow or in a week" . However, Mr. Danilov warned that: "The Ukrainian government has no right to make a mistake in this decision because this is a historic opportunity that we cannot lose".
Ukraine has been planning a counterattack for months. However, it wants as much time as possible to train its army and receive military equipment from its Western allies.
Regarding the prospects for peace talks, on May 26, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin stated that Ukraine's abandonment of its efforts to join NATO and the EU and its return to non-aligned neutral status is one of the conditions for a successful peace process. Deputy Minister Galuzin affirmed that protecting the rights of Russian speakers and ethnic minorities is an essential element of a peaceful solution.
