The Kyiv Independent on October 27 quoted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as saying that Russia lost at least one brigade while trying to control the town of Avdiivka in the Donetsk region in the latest attack.

A brigade in the Russian army can consist of 2,000-8,000 soldiers, according to the Global Security website.

"Russia will continue to try to take full control of Donbas. They have tried several times to encircle Avdiivka, but each time they were stopped and repelled by our soldiers, causing losses," President Zelensky told British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in a phone call on October 27.

Over the past few weeks, Russia has intensified its attacks on Avdiivka, a frontline town a few kilometers north of the Russian-controlled city of Donetsk. Moscow is said to have deployed extensive forces in an attempt to encircle the town, but has suffered heavy losses in manpower and equipment in the process.

According to the Office of the President of Ukraine, in addition to the situation on the battlefield, President Zelensky and Prime Minister Sunak also discussed additional support for Ukraine, the country's air defense needs and the security situation in the Black Sea.

Mr Zelensky assured that the temporary Black Sea corridor established by Ukraine will continue to operate “despite any threats”. The two leaders discussed steps to insure civilian ships.

The Ukrainian president thanked the UK for providing an additional £100 million (VND2,986 billion) in military aid announced on October 11. This aid package includes many military equipment that can help deal with minefields, as well as the MIS-DS Terrahawk Paladin remote-controlled air defense system.

Russia has not commented on the damage in the Avdiivka direction as reported by Mr. Zelensky.

US, Germany aid Ukraine

AFP news agency reported on October 27 that the US announced an additional $150 million in security aid to Ukraine, including artillery and ammunition for small arms, as well as anti-tank weapons.

Washington is by far the largest security aid donor to Kyiv, having pledged a total of $43.9 billion since February 2022.

However, some Republicans do not support aid to Ukraine, so the US government is now relying on previously approved aid, as further approval is facing obstacles in Congress.

The Pentagon said in a statement that the new aid package "uses previously approved aid for Ukraine in the previous fiscal year."

"The Biden administration calls on Congress to fulfill its commitment to the people of Ukraine by directing additional funding to ensure Ukraine continues to have what it needs to defend itself from Russia's brutal war of choice," the statement said.

White House: Existing aid to Ukraine is not 'infinite'

The package also includes anti-aircraft missiles, night vision devices, demolition ammunition and warm clothing. President Zelensky thanked the new aid package and said that strengthening air defense capabilities is crucial as winter approaches to protect Ukraine’s cities and infrastructure.

In another development, Reuters reported that Germany has provided the third IRIS-T SLM air defense system to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the German Defense Ministry said Germany's deal to buy Patriot air defense systems to replace those already donated to Ukraine will take longer than originally planned.

Negotiations with US firm Raytheon to buy a number of Patriot systems worth $26.4 billion are underway, with delivery scheduled for 2025 and completion in 2027.
