At a press conference on January 10, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova downplayed the importance of a "secret meeting" between Ukraine and other countries last month on a peace plan as the conflict with Russia nears its third year.
According to the Russian diplomat, this is just part of the strategy of the administration of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the West to attract attention and promote Kiev's "peace formula".
Ms. Zakharova also said that these types of meetings are meaningless because Russia does not participate.
The comments came after Bloomberg quoted unnamed officials on January 9 as saying that representatives from Ukraine, G7 countries and several other countries such as India and Turkey held secret peace talks in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, last month.
Other key countries such as China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Brazil were also invited to attend, but did not send representatives. Russia, a party to the conflict in Ukraine, was not invited.
The talks did not produce concrete results, but demonstrated efforts by Ukraine and its allies to draw countries outside the West to support Kiev's peace formula, the source said.
Ukraine proposed a "peace formula" by the end of 2022, including a number of proposals such as restoring Ukraine's territorial integrity and asking Russia to pay war reparations. However, Moscow considered Kiev's proposal unrealistic.
