"In recent weeks, Russian forces have advanced through the ruins of Marinka, a city in the Donetsk region. Russia now appears to control most of these areas. However, Ukrainian forces still control territories on the western edge of the city," the British Ministry of Defense reported on December 5.
British intelligence believes that one of Russia’s main aims is to continue to expand its control over the rest of Donetsk. The resumption of operations against Marinka is part of Russia’s autumn offensive to achieve that goal.
Marinka is located southwest of the city of Donetsk and about 30km southwest of the flashpoint Avdiivka. Since 2014, the city has been on the front line and has become a stronghold of the Ukrainian armed forces. The Russian military has been attacking Marinka since launching a special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022.
Before the conflict, the city had a population of about 9,000, but now the city has been almost completely destroyed.
Last month, bloggers said Russia controlled about 95 percent of Marinka, while Ukraine held only a small portion on the western edge.
