Russia has controlled Bakhmut since May. And Ukraine has been waging a counter-offensive since June to try to retake southern and eastern regions, including the town.

Unusual movements around Bakhmut

Writing on Telegram, the Commander of the Ukrainian Infantry updated the situation of Russian troops here, according to which Russia is strengthening its troops around the town, at the same time switching from a defensive to an offensive state.

General Syrskyi described the situation as difficult in the east, with Russian troops particularly active near the Kyiv-held town of Kupiansk. The general said Russian units were trying to simultaneously advance on the town from different directions.

The Ukrainian commander also said that the Russian side suffered heavy losses, but this information has not been confirmed by independent sources, according to Reuters.

Meanwhile, TASS quoted the Russian Defense Ministry as saying that within 24 hours up to October 30, Russian forces had repelled nine attacks by Ukrainian troops in the Kupiansk area.

The Russian Defense Ministry also said that on the same day, its air defense forces shot down 39 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and two missiles launched from the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) at the front lines.

On the same day, the Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian army said Russian troops continued to try to seize control of the town of Andriivka south of Bakhmut, after Kyiv forces claimed to have taken it back in September.

Developments in Crimea

Also on October 30, the Ukrainian military announced that it had hit part of the Russian air defense system on the west coast of Crimea, according to AFP.

"Armed forces have hit a strategic target of the Russian air defense system on the western bank of Crimea," the press service of the Ukrainian military said in a statement on social media, without providing further information.

However, the pro-Russian military Telegram channel Rybar suspected that Ukraine had fired two US-made ATACMS (Army Combat Missile System) missiles. And these two missiles fell near the village of Olenivka on the west coast of the Crimean peninsula.

Rybar said that Russian forces were unable to shoot down the missiles, "but due to the measures taken beforehand, no serious losses occurred." Half an hour later, the Russian Black Sea Fleet spotted three Ukrainian naval motorboats near Sevastopol and destroyed one.

Russia has not commented on the information, but said Russian air defense forces destroyed eight Storm Shadow cruise missiles heading towards targets in Crimea.

Germany aims to complete military modernization plan by the end of this decade

Russia changes commander in Dnipro

Amid the tense situation on all fronts, TASS reported that General Mikhail Teplinsky, Commander of the Russian Airborne Forces, has been appointed as the new commander of Russia's Dnieper Group of Forces.

Izvestia newspaper reported that General Teplinsky was chosen to replace General Oleg Makarevich in this position.

The Russian armed forces are divided into about six main groups. Military blogger "Operation Z" said the Dnieper group was deployed in southern Ukraine. This is also where the Institute for the Study of War (USA) said on October 19 that Ukrainian forces had broken through Russian defense lines on the left bank, that is, the southern bank of the Dnipro River.

However, Russia said at that time it had thwarted Ukrainian attempts to cross the river.

Experts fear Ukraine will run out of ammunition by 2024

In a related development, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warned that the country "must be prepared for the risk of conflict" in Europe.

Mr Pistorius warned that the conflict in Ukraine and the situation in the Gaza Strip would impact German society. Berlin needed to act to defend itself.

The German army has just been given an additional 100 billion euros for its efforts to modernize the army and equip its forces with weapons and equipment.

Minister Pistorius promised that the German army would be in a completely different place once the reform effort is completed by the end of the decade.
