Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on February 6 that Russia will not accept a "temporary ceasefire" as a solution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

"A temporary ceasefire or, as many say, a freeze on the conflict, is unacceptable. We need reliable, legally binding agreements and mechanisms to ensure that the crisis will not recur," Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stressed at a press conference on February 6, according to RT.

The pause in fighting, one way or another, will only allow “the Kyiv regime” to rearm and be ready to resume the conflict at a later date, Zakharova said. She added that the pause in fighting “will be used by the West as a whole or by its individual representatives to strengthen the military potential of the Kyiv regime and, of course, to carry out armed retaliation.”

Ms Zakharova signalled that Moscow was still holding back on any commitments from the new US administration to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Ms Zakharova said that so far, US President Donald Trump and his team had made a lot of statements but taken little or no practical steps.

Ukraine declares readiness to open humanitarian corridor in Kursk

Meanwhile, the office of President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on February 6 that they were ready to open a humanitarian corridor for hundreds of Russian civilians living in border areas controlled by the Ukrainian army in Russia's Kursk province to return to Russian-controlled territory, if Moscow requested, according to AFP.

More than 1,500 civilians are still living in areas of Kursk province that were taken over by the Ukrainian army in a surprise cross-border offensive launched in August 2024.

"We are ready to open a humanitarian corridor from Kursk province to the depths of Russia in response to the official request of the Russian Federation," the office of President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed in a statement.

"It is clear that the Russians do not want such a humanitarian corridor, because we have not received a corresponding request from them," the office of President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed, claiming that Moscow is "indifferent" to the fate of Russian citizens.

The offer came as Moscow accused Ukrainian forces of attempting a new offensive in Kursk. Mr Zelensky praised Ukrainian troops for taking control of large swathes of Russian territory over the past six months.

Russia has regained territory, but Ukraine still controls dozens of border settlements around the central city of Sudzha in Kursk, according to AFP.

The Russian Defense Ministry accused Ukrainian troops and armored vehicles of carrying out eight attacks near the villages of Ulanok and Cherkasskaya Konopelka in Kursk on February 6. The Russian Defense Ministry said the new attacks had been repelled, according to Reuters.

There is currently no information about the reaction of Russia or Ukraine to each side's statement.

Trump's special envoy meets with Ukrainian ambassador

As the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues, US President Donald Trump's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, had a "thorough discussion" with Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova in Washington DC on February 6.

Ambassador Markarova wrote on Facebook that this was her first meeting with Mr. Kellogg since his appointment, although the two had met before, according to Reuters.

Ukraine has sought to build close ties with the new administration under President Trump, who has said he wants to quickly end the nearly three-year-old Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the working date for the visit of the US delegation to Ukraine has been set.

Meanwhile, RIA news agency quoted senior Russian lawmaker Leonid Slutsky as saying that preparations for a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and President Trump are at an "advanced stage". Mr. Slutsky, head of the international affairs committee of the State Duma (the lower house of the Russian parliament), said the meeting between the two leaders could take place in February or March, according to RIA.
