Ukraine predicts Russia will increase UAV attacks in winter?

Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yury Ihnat said on October 8 that the force expected the number of Russian drone attacks on Ukraine to increase to a record high this winter, according to Reuters.

Mr. Ihnat added that September data showed that Russia’s use of Iranian-designed Shahed suicide drones would surpass last year’s figure. He asserted that Russia launched more than 500 UAVs into Ukraine in September.

Mr Ihnat compared the figure to Russia's air campaign against Ukraine last winter, when he said about 1,000 Shahed UAVs were used in six months.

Impact of the Israel-Gaza conflict

Polish President Andrzej Duda said on October 8 that the current violence between Hamas and Israel benefits Russia because it distracts international attention from the war in Ukraine and could lead to new migration pressure on Europe, according to Reuters.

Poland, a staunch supporter of Kyiv since the Russia-Ukraine conflict erupted on February 24, 2022, has sheltered more than a million Ukrainian refugees. But Warsaw has flatly rejected any EU mechanism that would require Poland to take in some of the illegal immigrants entering the bloc from other directions. Russia did not immediately comment on Duda's remarks.

On October 7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on world leaders to show solidarity and unity in supporting Israel and condemning Hamas' "terrorist attack".

Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Ministry said Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7 was an act of Palestinian self-defense and called on Muslim countries to support their rights, according to Reuters.
