According to Bloomberg, in its statement, the FSB alleged that iPhone manufacturer Apple had collaborated closely with the NSA for US intelligence purposes. The attacks were allegedly related to SIM cards used by diplomats based in Russia, NATO countries, Israel, and China.

The FSB alleges that the NSA is exploiting a backdoor in the iPhone for espionage purposes.

The report comes shortly after cybersecurity firm Kaspersky published a blog post stating that the iPhones of dozens of its employees had been hacked, including technical details of how the hacking process worked. The incident went undetected for years, and Kaspersky has been unable to identify who was behind the attack, which it described as "a highly sophisticated, professionally targeted cyberattack."

In an email, a Kaspersky spokesperson said the hacking campaign was detected earlier this year and Russian authorities found the attacks to be related. A Kaspersky employee also said the company's and FSB's statements were linked, adding that the spyware worked on older versions of Apple's operating system.

Kaspersky reports that hackers infiltrated iPhones by sending malicious attachments via iMessage. These attachments would immediately activate without requiring the user to click on anything. This is a hacking method used by spyware companies, including the Israeli company NSO Group.

Neither Apple nor the NSA has commented on the report. The incident comes amid escalating tensions between the US and Russia over the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Last month, the US Department of Justice announced it had disrupted a years-long hacking operation conducted by an FSB unit called Turla. According to US officials, the malware called Snake, operated by Turla, was present in more than 50 countries and had been used by the group for over 20 years. The US government also banned the use of Kaspersky software on federal systems in 2017 due to concerns about espionage.
