Russia warned the incoming administration of US President-elect Donald Trump against resuming nuclear testing, stressing that Moscow is ready to act to protect its security.
Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, who is in charge of Moscow's arms control, recalled on December 27 that US President-elect Trump refused to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) during his first term.
"The international situation is extremely difficult, US policy in many aspects is extremely hostile to us," Ryabkov was quoted as saying by Kommersant .
“Therefore, the options for Russia to act in the interests of ensuring its security, and the potential measures and actions that Russia has to do that – and send politically appropriate signals – do not rule out anything,” Mr. Ryabkov asserted.
Mr. Trump's side has not commented on Mr. Ryabkov's statement regarding the possibility of Russia resuming nuclear testing.

During his 2017-2021 term, the Trump administration discussed the possibility of conducting the first US nuclear test since 1992, according to The Washington Post. In 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin officially canceled Russia's ratification of the CTBT to ensure a balance between Russia and the US in the nuclear field because Washington had not ratified the treaty.
According to the Federation of American Scientists, Russia currently possesses 5,580 warheads and the United States with 5,044 warheads, the two largest nuclear powers in the world, holding about 88% of the world's nuclear weapons.
In November, President Putin lowered the threshold for a nuclear strike after Ukraine used US-made ATACMS missiles to attack Russia.
