Russia warns Israel of “unimaginable” consequences, NATO country interested in joining BRICS, Lebanon to elect president

* Russia warned of the consequences if Israel launches a ground operation against Lebanon, saying that "advancing one meter will lead to months of hostilities, two meters will mean years of fighting, and three meters - even unimaginable," Russian Ambassador to Israel Anatoly Viktorov said. (TASS)

* Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin will visit Iran on September 30 and hold talks with President Masud Pezeshkian and Vice President Mohamad Reza Aref of the host country. The two sides will focus on discussing cooperation projects in the fields of transport, energy, industry and agriculture. (AFP)

* Russian President is confident of achieving all the goals set in Ukraine, in the third year of conflict with its neighbor, as he sent a video message marking the second anniversary of Russia's annexation of four Ukrainian regions (Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson). (TASS)

* US citizen Stephen James Hubbard, 72, has pleaded guilty to charges of mercenary activities, admitting that he received money to fight for Ukraine against Russia. If convicted, Mr. Hubbard faces a sentence of 7-15 years in prison. (RIA)

* Turkey's entry into the BRICS group of emerging economies will not only benefit the country but will also make important contributions to global peace, as Ankara is currently participating in many international cooperation formats, including the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), according to the country's Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus. * Germany supports Israel's right to self-defense after Israel killed Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in an airstrike in Beirut on September 27. (Reuters)

* Denmark has placed a major arms order from German manufacturer Rheinmetall, including 16 Skyranger 30 mobile air defense systems. The Skyranger 30 can be integrated into wheeled vehicles already in service with the Danish armed forces. The systems are expected to be delivered in 2027-2028. (Defence blog)

* Denmark has released $194 million in arms aid to Ukraine to help Kiev bolster its heavily-stressed arsenal in the face of Russia's military campaign. The weapons and equipment will be produced in Ukraine, but funded through Danish funds and frozen Russian assets. (AFP)

* Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico visited South Korea and held talks with host President Yoon Suk Yeol. The two leaders adopted a joint statement on building a strategic partnership that includes cooperation in the fields of security, defense, economy, trade, energy and technology.

The two sides agreed to strengthen bilateral ties and cooperate in carbon-free energy industries. Fico supported the South Korean leader's pursuit of peaceful unification with North Korea based on liberal democracy and pledged to strengthen cooperation for peace on the Korean Peninsula. (Yonhap)

* The 4th joint patrol in the East Sea by naval forces from the Philippines, Japan, Australia, the US and New Zealand on September 29.

The patrol involved six warships including BRP Antonio Luna (FF-151), BRP Emilio Jacinto (PS-35), USS Howard (DDG-83), HMAS Sydney (DDG-42), JS Sazanami (DD-113) and HMNZS Aotearoa (A-11) and patrol aircraft. China sent two ships to monitor closely. (Philstar)

* Japan has set a date for an early general election on October 27, according to the new president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Ishiba Shigeru. According to regulations, the election must take place before the current term of members of the House of Representatives ends in October 2025. (AFP)

* South Korea, the United States and Japan agreed to step up joint efforts against North Korea's illicit cyber activities, which have increasingly targeted the virtual currency industry. * Lebanon will hold a parliamentary session to elect a new president after a Hezbollah-Israeli ceasefire came into effect, Lebanese interim Prime Minister Najib Mikati said. * Hamas leader in Lebanon Fatah Sharif Abu al-Amine was killed along with his wife and two children in an Israeli airstrike on the Al-Bass camp in the south on September 30. (TASS)

* Hezbollah has denied appointing Hashem Safieddine as its new leader to replace Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in Israeli airstrikes on the Lebanese capital Beirut on September 27. (Press TV)

* Iran fears infiltration by Israeli spies after deadly pager attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon this month. Iran is now conducting a wide-ranging campaign to inspect all communications equipment used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). (Reuters)

* More than 10,000 people have fled from Lebanon to Syria since fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah escalated this month, the head of the United Nations refugee agency Filippo Grandi said on September 30. (Reuters)

* US President Joe Biden said conflict across the Middle East “must be avoided” as the latest Israeli air strikes killed more than 50 people in Lebanon, alongside attacks on targets in the Gaza Strip and further afield in Yemen. (AFP)

* The two US presidential candidates had a busy weekend as Vice President Kamala Harris raised $55 million in two fundraising events, while former President Donald Trump gave a campaign speech in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, where voters are considered to be undecided. (Reuters)
