RT quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying that the information that Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed "freezing" the conflict in Ukraine with the US is not true.

Earlier, on February 13, Reuters news agency quoted its own source as saying that Russian leader Putin, through a diplomatic intermediary channel, proposed to Washington “a ceasefire in Ukraine to freeze the conflict”. According to this source, the US side rejected this proposal.

Also according to Mr. Peskov, the information published by Reuters is: "Not true, this is untrue."

According to Mr. Peskov, if the negotiations between Moscow and Kiev come true, the Ukrainian side will have to accept the reality of the battlefield after the failed counteroffensive campaign in the summer of 2023.

In an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson last week, Mr. Putin said Russia maintains contact with the US “through various agencies.”

American journalist Carlson said that President Putin wants to end the conflict soon, but the longer the war lasts, the narrower the door for negotiations becomes.

According to the Russian leader, Moscow has repeatedly told Washington that “if the West really wants to stop the conflict, it needs to stop supplying weapons” to Ukraine.

President Putin stressed that when the West stops aid to Ukraine the conflict "will end within a few weeks".

Mr Putin also reiterated that Russia remains ready to negotiate with Ukraine, but for this to happen President Volodymy Zelensky should at least cancel the decree banning negotiations with Moscow.

In a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos last month, Mr Zelensky warned his Western allies against trying to broker a ceasefire with Russia.

“Any ceasefire will not prevent the conflict from erupting again,” Mr. Zelensky stressed, adding that the West should instead provide Kiev with more weapons so that it can achieve victory through military means.
