On March 7, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she would deploy 750 soldiers from the state's National Guard to help New York City police maintain security at the busiest stations in the city's vast subway system.
Another 250 officers from the New York State Police and the state-run Metropolitan Transportation Authority will also join the effort, which Hochul said was aimed at preventing crime. She said the extra security was in response to recent attacks on subway users and employees.
Crime on the New York City subway fell about 15% in February compared to the same month in 2023, according to police data. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said he sent about 1,000 more city police officers to ensure security in February, after assaults and thefts increased.
Last week, an unidentified assailant seriously injured a subway conductor with a weapon. It was one of several recent assaults on subway workers that have sparked outrage among labor unions and led to service disruptions as subway workers stopped work to file safety complaints.
