On the afternoon of June 7th, after the math exam at the gate of Chanh Hung Secondary School, District 8, a male student, wearing a mask, stood dejectedly on his father's motorbike, tears streaming down his face. Every exam brings sadness and regret.
For the 2023-2024 school year, Ho Chi Minh City has 77,294 places available in 10th grade through the entrance exam at 114 high schools across the city, with 96,334 candidates registering to take the exam. Approximately 20,000 candidates will not be admitted to public high schools and will have to choose other options. Therefore, over 90,000 families will be on tenterhooks from now until the day the cutoff scores are announced.
Hugs during exam season
One mother told me that during the days her child was taking exams, she took time off from work to wait at the school gate to ease her worries, because even if she went to work, her mind would be completely focused on the exams. Another father, named Son Lam, residing in District 8, while waiting for his son, recounted that for the past few weeks, all family members had been "walking softly, speaking quietly, and smiling gently," avoiding watching TV late at night... so that his son could have the quietest space possible to study. Although he always appeared calm in front of his son, he was restless and anxious inside.
What touched the reporters outside the Ho Chi Minh City 10th grade entrance exam centers was perhaps the hugs parents gave their children. When candidates broke down in tears because they didn't do well on the exam, those were also tears in their father's arms, seeking comfort and understanding. But, for me, something even more touching outside the exam center was hearing a man's heartfelt story about his wife.
She has been a worker at PouYuen Company for 20 years, working from early morning until late at night, constantly worried about losing her job during layoffs, and has never been able to take her child to school. She misses her child and can only think of her from the factory. Yesterday, her husband took their daughter to the exam alone, his only dream being for her to get into a public high school so that their limited finances could support her education.
I remember my mother. Throughout my childhood, through my 10th grade exams, and even on the day I left my hometown for the city to take the university entrance exam, my mother never once held my hand to the school gate. I blamed her for being so cold. Until I became a mother myself. Every parent has their own unique way of showing love and concern for their children. Surely my mother, and even the mother who worked as a factory worker for 20 years, would hug and hold her child's hand tightly if she could take them to an exam, even just once…
