In early October 2023, many Netflix subscribers in Vietnam began receiving notifications about "upcoming changes to service membership status" via email that registered for a free account on this online movie viewing platform. Accordingly, the free policy for subscribers on Android smartphones will stop from November 1, 2023.
After that time, current account holders will no longer be members of this service and will not be able to continue using it without upgrading to a paid package, with a subscription price starting at VND 70,000/month. Users who want to cancel the package do not need to do anything, the company will automatically cancel the account's membership when the free viewing program ends.
Netflix stops free package, Vietnamese users have the option to subscribe for 70,000 VND/month
The free subscription package is available from November 2021 but is only available to smartphone users running the Android operating system. Vietnam is the second market in the world to take advantage of this offer, after Kenya. The free subscription comes with some limitations such as only being able to watch Netflix Original content and limited other content, along with low resolution, only suitable for phone screens. Users also cannot use this type of account on devices other than Android smartphones.
The free service is now closing down for new signups after two years of operation, a move that is said to be part of a plan to increase revenue and subscriber numbers on the platform.
Since July 2023, Netflix has begun to tighten account sharing in Vietnam. Many users of the service on TV are required to verify that they live in the same household as the registered account owner to continue watching the desired content. Shared accounts are identified through the IP address and ID of the device, and user activities. Therefore, if they are not in the same household as the account owner, the profiles will continuously receive verification notifications every time they want to watch a movie.
The earlier tightening decision has had a significant effect on a global scale. Netflix's July financial report showed that 5.9 million new accounts came to the platform in the second quarter of 2023, with the US and Canada markets seeing the most growth since 2021.
