This isn't the first time Netflix has experimented with a free-to-watch, ad-supported model. Previously, in 2021, the company launched a trial of a similar service in Kenya, but discontinued it in October 2023.
Currently, Netflix offers an ad-supported streaming plan called "Standard with Ads" for $6.99 per month (approximately 178,000 VND), providing Full HD resolution and allowing simultaneous viewing on two devices – an ideal option for small families or individual users. This plan was introduced after Netflix removed its cheapest ad-free plan in July 2023, causing considerable controversy among users.
The introduction of a free, ad-supported plan is seen as a strategic move by Netflix to attract new users, especially those who cannot afford paid subscriptions. However, questions remain about whether this model will be successful and whether the ads will negatively impact the user's viewing experience.
In addition, Netflix is also experimenting with several other changes, including a new homepage interface, to improve the user experience and enhance content discovery on the platform.
