Implementing Project 6 on “Preserving and promoting the fine traditional cultural values of ethnic minorities associated with tourism development” under the National Target Program for socio-economic development of ethnic minority and mountainous areas giai đoạn 2021-2030 (abbreviated as National Target Program 1719), over the years, Yen Luong commune, Thanh Son district has always strived to preserve the traditional cultural features of ethnic minorities, including the traditional costumes of Dao Tien women.

During their leisure time, Dao Tien women in Bo Xo area, Yen Luong commune, Thanh Son district often exchange experiences on how to dye fabric and embroider together to create beautiful traditional costumes.

The traditional clothing of Dao Tien women is elegant, refined, and embodies many unique cultural values. Unlike the clothing of Dao Quan Chet women, which features many prominent patterns, mainly in red, the clothing of Dao Tien women is predominantly indigo and white, creating a harmonious blend. Through conversations with Dao Tien women in the Bo Xo area, we learned that creating a satisfactory outfit requires many steps, including cotton cultivation, yarn spinning, weaving, dyeing, printing patterns with beeswax, cutting, sewing, and embroidery. The tools used for creating patterns are pens with copper nibs or bamboo sticks bent into a triangular shape. Larger ones are used for detailing flowers and leaves, while medium-sized ones are used for drawing squares, circles, birds, and snails. After melting the beeswax, they dip the pen tip to draw the pattern onto the fabric. Once the drawing is complete, the fabric is dyed with indigo. After the dyeing process is finished, it is soaked in hot water to melt the wax, revealing the patterns.

While skillfully embroidering each stitch onto the indigo-dyed fabric, Ms. Ly Thi Mai from Bo Xo area shared: "From the age of 8-10, Dao Tien girls are taught by their grandmothers and mothers how to sew and embroider their ethnic costumes. They start by learning to embroider the smallest details, from sleeves and hems to scarves and even entire blouses and skirts. When they become proficient in needlework, they begin to make their own clothes. For Dao Tien women, beautiful dresses and blouses are cherished as precious family possessions."

The traditional clothing of Dao Tien women is elegant, refined, and embodies many unique cultural values.

A complete traditional costume of Dao Tien women includes: a blouse, bodice, leggings, belt, headscarf, long skirt, and silver jewelry. The Dao Tien blouse has no buttons, only slits and a belt; at the back of the collar, strung with 6 to 9 silver coins, is considered a unique characteristic of the Dao Tien ethnic group. The belt is red and white, symbolizing the bond between men and women. The headscarf worn by Dao Tien women is white, with two square patterned ends. When wearing the headscarf, women usually tie their hair up in a bun, creating a neat and harmonious look suitable for the natural environment.

To add charm to their attire, Dao Tien women often adorn themselves with silver bracelets and necklaces featuring intricate designs. When attending festivals, Dao Tien girls often drape a scarf diagonally across their shoulders, creating a graceful look while subtly showcasing their skillful hands through the details and lines of their needlework.

Comrade Dinh Van Phong – Chairman of the People's Committee of Yen Luong commune, said: Preserving the traditional costumes of Dao Tien women has always been a priority for the commune, ensuring that these cultural beauties do not fade over time. At the same time, we encourage Dao Tien women to actively teach their daughters and granddaughters how to sew and embroider traditional costumes. This is also one of the ways to preserve traditional cultural values in conjunction with community tourism models that are developing in many localities in the district, attracting many tourists to learn about the unique customs and traditions of the Dao ethnic group.

Dao Tien women place great importance on clothing, even young children are dressed by their parents in skillfully sewn and embroidered, elaborate outfits. Nowadays, with the development of society, Dao Tien people only wear traditional clothing on holidays, festivals, or important family occasions. Therefore, preserving, maintaining, and promoting the cultural identity through the traditional clothing of the Dao Tien people is essential. This will foster pride and raise awareness of ethnic culture among the younger generation.
