Dr. Huynh Wynn Tran, Associate Professor at California Northstate Medical University and Associate Professor of Pharmacy at Western University (USA), said that in order for Vietnam's medical degrees to be more recognized in the world, Vietnam should focus on post-graduate training, focusing more on practical training and doctors who want to practice medicine must undergo residency training.

This year, for the first time, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy uses an additional admission method based on SAT exam results for medical and dental majors.

"In Thailand and the Philippines, medical training is completely in English, thereby creating a foundation to help doctors integrate well and access the world's medical knowledge. If Vietnam cannot apply 100% training in English immediately, it can gradually convert by testing students' learning outcomes in certain subjects," said Dr. Huynh Wynn Tran.

Prof. Dr. Thach Nguyen, Vice Principal and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Tan Tao University, also believes that the essential factor for Vietnamese doctors to be able to practice in the US or Europe is to be good at English. Next, they must have an attitude of constantly learning because medicine changes every day. In addition, they must always research and explore to bring valuable contributions to world medicine and science.

Currently in Vietnam, VinUni offers medical training entirely in English. Tan Tao University's general medicine program is taught in Vietnamese, but USMLE preparation courses will be taught in both English and Vietnamese and the English output is IELTS 5.5 or equivalent. The remaining universities are still training in Vietnamese. However, some schools are aiming to develop foreign languages for learners by changing their admissions. For example, since 2019, the medical program of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy has started adding an admission method that combines high school graduation exam scores in 3 subjects: math, chemistry, and biology with the converted score of an international English certificate (IELTS 6.0 or higher, or TOEFL iBT 60 or higher). This year, for the first time, the school has used an additional admission method based on SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) results for medical and dental majors. Hanoi Medical University is also reserving up to 40% of its quota for the admission method combining high school graduation exam scores in three subjects: math, chemistry, and biology with international English or French certificates, applicable to medical and dental majors.

USMLE preparation courses for general medicine at Tan Tao University are taught bilingually in English and Vietnamese and the English output is IELTS 5.5 or equivalent.

Dr. Huynh Wynn Tran said that the United States currently has about 660,000 doctors. Of these, 180,000 doctors graduated from medical schools outside the United States, accounting for about 26.15%. In fact, medical schools in the United States do not train enough doctors to supply the entire country. The average salary after completing the residency program is 170,000 - 250,000 USD/year (about 4.3 - 6 billion VND).

"Doctors who graduate from outside the US will have difficulty getting into residency in diagnostic imaging, dermatology, anesthesia, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and orthopedics. However, internal medicine, family medicine, psychology, and pediatrics are specialties that doctors who graduate from the US do not favor, so this is fertile ground for doctors who graduate from outside the US to compete," Dr. Wynn Tran informed.
