On the afternoon of June 2, the National Assembly discussed the draft Law amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Law on Exit and Entry of Vietnamese Citizens and the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam.
Delegate Nguyen Thanh Phuong (Can Tho) agreed to increase visa duration for foreigners from 30 days to 3 months.
According to a report by the Ministry of Public Security, since Vietnam restored its entry and exit policy from March 15, 2022, the number of e-visas issued has increased 46.6 times compared to the same period before the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Government has drafted a resolution on the list of 156 countries and territories that issue electronic visas. Deputy Nguyen Thanh Phuong commented, "We are creating very favorable conditions for foreigners to come to Vietnam in terms of time and validity of single or multiple entry visas, meeting the long-term vacation needs of foreign tourists...".
He expressed hope that the new regulation will have a positive impact on the tourism industry and our country's economy.
Delegate Nguyen Thanh Phuong proposed to study regulations on granting visas at airports for certain subjects in certain countries and airports in Vietnam.
Deputy Vu Tien Loc (Hanoi) shared that Vietnam is a country with great tourism potential and is a leading destination in attracting international investment. After the pandemic, with the shift of the global supply chain, Vietnam is receiving a lot of attention from the world.
Mr. Vu Tien Loc affirmed that raising the visa from no more than 30 days to no more than 3 months "is truly a breakthrough".
Proposal to increase temporary residence period to 60 days
Regarding the increase in temporary stay from 15 to 45 days for citizens of countries that Vietnam unilaterally exempts from visas, Deputy Nguyen Thanh Phuong agreed and said that 30-60 days is appropriate, especially for tourists whose trips are long enough for relaxation, sightseeing, medical treatment or business.
However, Deputy Nguyen Thanh Phuong proposed to consider allowing temporary residence up to 60 days because Thailand and Singapore are 45 and 90 days.
Like Deputy Nguyen Thanh Phuong, Deputy Vu Tien Loc proposed raising the minimum to 15 to 60 days, because 45 days is the average in the region.
Mr. Loc explained: "The regional average target is no longer our standard. Our standard is to reach the top level, group 3, group 4 in ASEAN, in all fields, not just in this field. If 45 days is equivalent to the regional average, I propose to increase it to 60 days to ensure the advanced level in ASEAN."
