Early morning sunlight penetrates the ice, Ta Xua, Lao Than like a crystal forest

On the morning of January 12, frost covered the high mountain peaks of the Northwest such as Ta Xua (Yen Bai) and Lao Than (Lao Cai).

Tourists are excited to witness ice covering many high mountain peaks in the Northwest.

This is the second consecutive day that frost has appeared thickly on these mountain peaks. Many tourists were surprised to encounter frost during their trip.

Mr. Doan Tran, a tour guide, led a trekking tour to Ta Xua peak from Tram Tau (Yen Bai) for two days over the weekend. Although he knew the temperature would drop, he was still surprised by the fairy-like scenery in the middle of the ice forest.

According to Mr. Doan, when trekking in winter, in addition to physical preparation, tourists need to closely monitor the weather forecast.

The temperature on the high mountains will drop sharply in the evening and is much different from the foot of the mountain. Visitors need to prepare warm life jackets, thermal shirts, socks, gloves, and waterproof jackets.

Visitors should also bring ginger candy, ginger tea, and a thermos to use in cold weather.

“This morning, there was still a lot of ice but it started to melt and fall off. The early morning sunlight passed through the ice crystals, creating a sparkling, crystal-like effect,” said Mr. Doan.

Mr. Phang A Tinh (local resident) said that last night and early this morning, the temperature on the top of Ta Xua (2,865m high) dropped to -1 degree Celsius, so ice still covered the tree branches on the mountain top area.

“From about 8-9am this morning, the sky cleared up, the temperature gradually increased, the ice on the tree branches began to melt and fall to the ground,” Mr. Tinh shared.

On Lao Than peak (2,862m high), there is still a lot of ice. Tourist Nguyen Trong Cung said that the temperature on the top of the mountain is only about 0 degrees Celsius but there is wind so it feels cold.

“If there is light rain in this weather, it will snow,” Mr. Cung shared.

In Sa Pa town (Lao Cai), the temperature dropped to about 1 degree Celsius, with frost covering roofs, trees, cars, etc. in some areas such as the town center, O Quy Ho pass, Ngu Chi Son commune, and Ta Phin.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that today (January 12) and tomorrow, the weather in the North, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An will be sunny during the day, cold at night and in the morning, especially in the mountainous and midland areas of the North, cold and severe cold. The high mountainous areas may continue to have frost and frost.
