According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, heat waves are widespread in the Southern region. In particular, the temperature in Can Tho City on March 17 fluctuated from 35-37 degrees, the weather was quite hot and dry.
According to records, on some roads in Ninh Kieu district such as Hoa Binh Avenue, 30/4 Street, 3/2 Street,... drink shops are always crowded because people's demand for refreshments in hot weather is increasing.
Ms. Ngoc Hang (sold sugarcane juice on 3/2 Street, Ninh Kieu District) said: “This whole week has been extremely hot, the number of customers has increased 3-4 times compared to normal days. Normally, I sell about 30 sugarcanes, but in the past 2-3 days, I have sold 50 sugarcanes in the morning alone. The price of each glass of sugarcane juice ranges from 15,000 to 20,000 VND. During this hot season, I can make a profit of millions of VND.”
“On normal days, I use about 200 coconuts to mix with ginseng water to sell. Due to the hot weather these days, the number of people buying cooling drinks has also increased, so I have increased to using nearly 300 coconuts/day,” said Ms. Sau (selling coconut ginseng on Hoa Binh Avenue, Ninh Kieu District).
According to Ms. Sau, the busiest time is around 11am-2pm when there are more than a dozen people waiting to buy. To sell to customers on time, Ms. Sau has to hire more people to help. "Even though we have prepared the drinks in bags, there are still many customers, so two people have to work hard to keep up. Thanks to that, the revenue of the water cart has increased 2-3 times compared to normal days," Ms. Sau added.
At Tan An market (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city), some traders said that due to strong consumption, supply could not meet demand, so fruit prices also increased, purchasing power increased about 30% compared to normal days.
“These days, fruits like grapefruit, pears, oranges, etc. are almost sold out by noon when they are brought to the market. Two days ago, we imported 20kg of oranges and they were sold out by noon. The next day, we imported 30kg but it was still not enough to sell. Because of the large number of customers, the price has also increased from a few thousand to tens of thousands of VND/kg,” said Ms. Kim Ngan (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city).
On these hot days, taking advantage of the time after work, Ms. Bui Thi Bich (a garment worker in Can Tho City) often stops by the market to buy fruit to make cool drinks to cool down the whole family.
“After work, I stop by the market to buy some oranges and grapefruits to make cool drinks for the whole family. The prices have increased, but they are still stable and not significant. If I buy soft drinks outside, I would buy a few glasses every day, so I buy fruit from the market to make my own drinks. It saves me from having to wait, and it is more economical than buying outside,” said Ms. Bich.
