Scorching heat turns irrigation canals into 'swimming pools' for Nghe An people

VietNamNetVietNamNet07/05/2023

These days, in Nghe An province, the weather is extremely hot, up to 41ºC, along with the southwest wind effect (Lao wind), making people feel uncomfortable because of the heat.

Therefore, every afternoon, along the Dao River, the irrigation canal through Yen Thanh district becomes a cooling "swimming pool".

People and children flocked to the irrigation canal in Yen Thanh district to cool off.
The water level in the canal is quite shallow, suitable for children.

According to the reporter's records, adults and young people who know how to swim can swim in the deeper Dao River; while children are accompanied by their parents, most of them are equipped with life jackets and practice swimming in irrigation canals with lower water levels.

Vu Huy Hoang (5th grade student in Yen Thanh town) said that it has been hot these past few days, so every afternoon when he has a day off from school, he goes to the canal with his friends to cool off.

The water surface is quite calm, people can comfortably soak and cool off.
A boy is happy to take a cool bath in weather over 40 degrees.

“I often take my children to the irrigation canal below the Dao River to practice swimming and bathe to cool off. This area is relatively flat, the water is not very deep so it is quite safe,” said Vu Ha (born in 1989, residing in Yen Thanh town).

The sun was setting, more and more parents were taking their children to the canal to swim, the children were very excited to learn to swim with their parents in the cool water.

Children wear life jackets and are accompanied by their classmates when swimming in the canal.

"Our house is near the Dao River, so every afternoon we invite each other to come here to cool off. The river water is naturally cool, so bathing is very comfortable after a tiring day of work," said Mr. Tang Xoan (residing in Tho Thanh commune).

Faced with the situation of people, especially children, flocking to rivers and irrigation canals to bathe, Yen Thanh District Youth Union has issued a document to communes and schools in the area to organize propaganda on drowning prevention for students this summer.

The girl was taken to the bath by her father.
Children were equipped with life jackets when entering the water.

Along the Dao River through Yen Thanh district, grassroots youth organizations and local authorities have propagated, put up warning signs, and built tire ladders to prevent people from drowning.

The temperature has been high these past few days, so people have chosen "natural swimming pools" to cool off.

“We also recommend that parents absolutely do not let their children swim in rivers, ponds, lakes, or irrigation canals without an adult accompanying them. Relatives also need to equip children with life jackets and some necessary skills to prevent drowning and injury accidents,” said Secretary of Yen Thanh District Youth Union Pham Thi Huyen Trang.

The younger group chose the smaller, shallower and safer section of the canal.

On this occasion, in some other localities such as Vinh City, Do Luong, Thanh Chuong, Nam Dan, etc., people also flocked to Lam River, Dao River and some dams, irrigation canals to cool off every afternoon. Local authorities also put up warning signs of dangerous deep water areas, recommending people to wear life jackets when swimming to ensure safety.
