According to Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Mai Van Khiem, in the immediate future, during the transitional season (April and May), extreme weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind may occur, especially in the late afternoon.
From now until October 2025, it is forecasted that dangerous weather conditions such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail, heavy rain, and strong winds will occur nationwide. Along with that, severe heat is forecast to appear nationwide in May.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, ENSO (an acronym for the phenomenon of abnormal warming of the surface sea water - El Nino and the phenomenon of abnormal cooling of the surface sea water - La Nina) is currently in neutral conditions, with the standard deviation of sea surface temperature in the central equatorial Pacific Ocean at approximately the same level as the average of many years in the first week of April.
From May to July 2025, the ENSO phenomenon is likely to maintain a neutral state with a probability of 70-90%. With the above trend, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts that in the coming time, the weather situation across the country will have many fluctuations.
In addition, in April and May, the possibility of widespread heat waves can also have adverse impacts on people's health, increase the risk of fires and explosions, forest fires, and affect production and daily life.
Assessing the weather developments with a "far" trend, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that with the above ENSO conditions, heat waves are likely to appear nationwide in May 2025.
From June, the heat wave tends to decrease in the Central Highlands and the South. In the North and Central regions, the heat wave is forecast to last until August; from September, the heat wave gradually decreases, the intensity of the heat wave is equivalent to the average of many years in the same period.
The average temperature across the country in the period from May to July 2025 is generally approximately the same as the average of many years; in the Northwest region, the temperature is 0.5-1 degree Celsius higher than the average of many years in the same period.
During the period from August to September 2025, the average temperature across the country is also forecast to be 0.5-1 degree Celsius higher than the average of many years in the same period. In October, it is generally at a level approximately equal to the average of many years in the same period.
Warning of dangerous weather phenomena
Along with the hot weather, from May to July 2025, storms and tropical depressions are likely to operate in the East Sea and affect our country at a level approximately equal to the average of many years (specifically, about 3.2 storms will appear in the East Sea; 1.2 storms will make landfall).
Notably, during the forecast period, there is a possibility of dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind across the country; especially during cold spells during the transitional season. It is forecasted that from May to July 2025, moderate to heavy rains are likely to occur in the Northern, North Central, Central Highlands and Southern regions.
With the above trend, the national hydrometeorological agency forecasts that storms, tropical depressions and the southwest monsoon are likely to cause strong winds and large waves affecting ship operations.
In the next period from August to October 2025, the ENSO phenomenon is likely to continue to remain neutral with a probability of 55-65%. Accordingly, the activity of storms and tropical depressions in the East Sea and landfall will be at a level equivalent to the average of many years (specifically, about 6.8 storms will occur in the East Sea; of which 2.8 storms will make landfall).
With the above climatic conditions, it is forecasted that dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind may occur nationwide; moderate to heavy rains may occur nationwide.
Tropical depressions and southwest monsoons are likely to cause strong winds and large waves affecting activities in the East Sea; heat waves, heavy rains, thunderstorms, tornadoes and lightning can negatively affect production activities and public health.
