Increase income from beekeeping for honey production.

Ha Nam province is blessed with abundant natural resources, including mountains and forests. Taking advantage of these natural advantages, beekeeping for honey production has developed strongly in recent years, not only increasing income but also contributing to the protection of the natural environment.

Mr. Tran Cong Vinh's family in Phu Phuc commune (Ly Nhan district) raises 60 bee colonies. Taking advantage of the local area's abundance of fruit trees such as longan and lychee, he has invested in beekeeping for many years. Mr. Vinh said: "This year, the weather is favorable, and fruit trees, especially longan trees, are blooming profusely, so we expect a higher honey yield than last year. Each type of flower gives honey a different characteristic flavor, but honey from longan and lychee flowers is of better quality, more popular in the market, and has higher economic value than other types of flower honey. Currently, the market price for honey ranges from 170,000 to 200,000 VND per liter. At the beginning of this season, I moved my bee colonies to collect lychee flower honey in some neighboring communes, areas with abundant flower sources, to maximize the honey yield right from the start of the season."

According to Mr. Chu Dinh Tu, a long-time longan grower in Moc Hoan commune (Duy Tien district), this year's longan blossoms are abundant, and favorable weather conditions have facilitated beekeeping households in harvesting honey. If the weather remains consistently sunny, the honey yield will certainly be high. Typically, honey can be harvested every 5-7 days, and one longan blossom harvest can yield 5-6 bee frames.

Harvesting honey at the household of Mr. Vu Van Hai, Do Le village, Lien Son commune (Kim Bang town).

For Mr. Vu Van Hai's family in Do Le village, Lien Son commune (Kim Bang town), they currently raise over 50 bee colonies. Taking advantage of the semi-mountainous land and his family's orchards, his beekeeping model consistently maintains a stable colony size and provides a relatively good income. Mr. Hai shared: "Beekeeping isn't as strenuous as raising other animals, but it requires diligence and hard work. Bees are very sensitive to environmental conditions, weather, especially dust and chemicals. I've been beekeeping for about 20 years. In the beginning, I faced many difficulties due to lack of experience. Because bees live in large colonies and fly to many places to collect pollen, they are easily infected with diseases and spread them quickly. Therefore, I am always conscious of collecting and cleaning up waste around the beekeeping area as well as using pesticides in agricultural production." In my opinion, to optimize productivity and turn bee products into marketable goods, beekeepers need to understand the biological characteristics and habits of bee colonies, and apply biosafety practices to prevent and control diseases. Initially, I only used my garden to raise bees for honey for my family. Later, seeing the effectiveness, I invested in expanding and increasing the colonies with the goal of selling honey. At one point, I raised over 100 bee colonies, harvesting 100 liters a day. Beekeeping has provided a steady annual income for my family, averaging 50-70 million VND per year, depending on the flowering season.

Previously, beekeeping and honey harvesting in Lien Son commune were mainly carried out on a small scale, spontaneously by the people, so in the early stages of development, the economic efficiency was not high. Since the establishment of the Lien Son Commune Honey Beekeeping Cooperative, it has contributed to transforming the local economic development model, promoting the development of beekeeping, and creating conditions for members to share experiences in caring for and developing bee colonies. In particular, the honey products of the Lien Son Commune Honey Beekeeping Cooperative have achieved OCOP 3-star certification. Mr. Nguyen Van Nhu, from Do Le village, said: "By joining the Cooperative, I have been able to share experiences in beekeeping, how to prevent bee diseases; and connect with and have the opportunity to buy quality bee colonies. Thanks to this, my family has now developed and is raising 40 bee colonies, providing a relatively stable income every year."

Besides its economic value, beekeeping for honey production also brings ecological benefits. With support from relevant agencies and efforts from the community, beekeeping for honey production in the province will continue to develop steadily, contributing to improving the lives of the people.
