On the morning of April 11, in Da Lat city, Lam Dong province, the National Agricultural Extension Center held a workshop on "Improving capacity to comply with standards and quality to promote the export of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables".
The workshop was attended by many experts, managers and businesses operating in the agricultural sector.
Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Le Quoc Thanh, Director of the National Agricultural Extension Center, said that Vietnam, with favorable natural conditions, has produced more than 120 types of vegetables of tropical, subtropical and temperate origin. Thanks to the application of science and technology, vegetable production can now be maintained year-round, serving domestic consumption and export needs.
During the 2016-2024 period, vegetable growing area will grow by an average of 1.4% per year, while output will increase by 2.6% per year. By 2024, the total vegetable growing area nationwide will reach more than 1 million hectares, with an output of over 19 million tons.
In order for the Vietnamese fruit and vegetable industry to truly “reach out to the ocean”, it is necessary to first promote production according to the value chain, with the responsible participation of relevant parties. Along with that, it is necessary to strengthen quality control from the growing area to packaging and processing in key areas and support farmers to convert to organic and biological farming, meeting market standards to improve competitiveness and expand the sustainable market for Vietnamese fruits and vegetables.
At the workshop, Mr. Le Vu Ngoc Kien, Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Policy and Strategy, said that by 2023, Vietnam's fruit tree area will reach more than 1.33 million hectares, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.7%/year in the period 2019-2023.
However, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports so far account for a very small proportion (about 1.9% of global export turnover); the proportion of processed products is low, there are limitations in packaging, production linkages, access to support policies; limitations in the agricultural product distribution system and trade promotion.
Therefore, Mr. Kien proposed solutions to improve quality standards and promote fruit and vegetable exports such as developing raw material areas, combining with the application of science and technology to improve productivity and quality; enhancing deep processing of fruit and vegetable products to increase export value and avoid technical barriers.
At the same time, it is necessary to implement market orientation solutions, focusing on large-scale markets (such as China, the US) and potential markets to have solutions to improve quality, product packaging, and appropriate promotion strategies.
Delegates exchanged and shared experiences at the workshop.
Also at the workshop, management agencies, experts, associations, businesses and farmers exchanged and shared experiences, practical lessons and feasible solutions to improve the capacity to comply with quality standards for the fruit and vegetable industry, not only to overcome technical barriers but also to elevate Vietnamese agricultural products on the world map.
