Recently, the Ministry of Education and Training decided that English will no longer be a compulsory subject in the high school graduation exam from 2025. This change has caused a lot of controversy and is predicted to have an impact on the current trend of learning English. Many opinions say that this decision will cause many students to reduce their desire and investment in learning foreign languages in general, and English in particular.
In the context of “everyone learning English” but also “overwhelming teachers”, possessing a prestigious teaching method certificate will help teachers and lecturers have more career opportunities and increase their income. Studying TESOL - a certificate in English teaching methods has been increasingly promoted in recent years.
In Vietnam, the Master's program in Theory and Methodology of Teaching English and Foreign Languages jointly between Hanoi University and the University of Canberra (HANU-UC MTESOL & FLT) is one of the leading international standard programs in this field.
The MTESOL joint program between Hanoi University and the University of Canberra (Australia) was signed and implemented in 2018, and has just entered its 5th year. The University of Canberra has the best quality of training in English theory and teaching methods in Australia, famous for building a flexible and applicable curriculum. The curriculum and training quality of the joint TESOL master's course at Hanoi University are directly managed by the University of Canberra team according to international standards.
The highlight of the MTESOL program is the harmonious combination of theory and practice. Learners are not only equipped with knowledge of language and language teaching methods but also have opportunities to practice teaching in the classroom and conduct research.
Specifically, in addition to the subjects in phase 1 taught by Hanoi University, there are 8 subjects in phase 2 of the program that are taught by lecturers from the University of Canberra. Students design their own lectures, practice teaching in class; then practice teaching with students who are university students at Hanoi University. During that process, lecturers will monitor and give comments, helping students see their weaknesses and improve their teaching methods.
With high applicability, the MTESOL program helps students to be equipped with in-depth knowledge and skills in language teaching related to many fields: education, culture and society. The goal of the program is to create opportunities for Vietnamese students to study foreign programs right in Vietnam under the instruction of highly qualified lecturers from both schools.
Therefore, the MTESOL program aims to serve a diverse range of learners, including both those with no experience and individuals with experience in language teaching.

Dr. Nguyen Hong Giang, Deputy Director of the MTESOL program at Hanoi University, shared: “With the MTESOL program, we believe that training in English teaching methods is not only a process of imparting knowledge but also a journey of interaction and shared learning. For those who are new to the teaching field, we believe that after completing the program, they will become more mature and confident in their careers.
In addition to accepting bachelor's degree graduates in languages or foreign language education, the MTESOL program also provides opportunities for graduates from other majors. You can both accumulate specialized knowledge and be equipped with knowledge and skills in languages and foreign language teaching when entering the labor market.
After 5 years of implementation, the MTESOL program in collaboration between Hanoi University and the University of Canberra has had more than 500 students - of which 183 graduated from phase 2. The number of students in the program has increased steadily over the years, with an average of 90 students per year.
“According to a recent survey by the program, 100% of graduates have stable jobs. Some have opened their own English centers or taught in schools at all levels, and some have become lecturers in joint programs at schools such as Greenwich, FPT, Swinburne, and RMIT,” added Dr. Nguyen Hong Giang, Deputy Director of the MTESOL program.
