On June 28, K Hospital informed that the hospital's doctors had just received and successfully treated a rare case, a patient with a "huge" tumor weighing up to 8kg in the abdomen.
Accordingly, the patient is LKP (23 years old, in Son La ). The patient's family said that recently, the patient noticed that his stomach was getting bigger but thought he was gaining weight so he did not go to the doctor. When his stomach was getting bigger and bigger abnormally, he went for an ultrasound at the local hospital. The results discovered a very large tumor in his stomach so he was transferred to the K Hospital for treatment.
Here, the patient underwent necessary tests, CT scan, ultrasound, blood test,... and discovered a solid tumor occupying the entire abdomen, about 40cm in size, the initial diagnosis was soft tissue sarcoma.

Soft tissue sarcoma is a malignant cancer that originates in the soft tissues of the body (including muscles, tendons, fat, lymph, blood vessels, and nerves). These cancers can develop anywhere in the body but are found mainly in the chest and abdomen...
Master, Doctor CKII Ha Hai Nam, Deputy Head of Department of Abdominal Surgery I, K Hospital said that when admitted to the hospital, the patient's excretory function was still stable, but because the tumor was too large, occupying the entire abdomen, compressing organs such as the liver, pancreas, bladder, and colon, causing the patient to feel uncomfortable, accompanied by difficulty breathing.
According to Dr. Nam, in this case the damage is too large, if not operated on, the tumor will hinder the function of other organs in the abdomen, compress the organs, affecting the quality of life, health and even the life of the patient. Without surgery, there is no other feasible treatment method.
Assessing the difficulties in surgery, Dr. Nam said that the large tumor occupied the entire abdomen, and the initial prognosis was that the kidney would have to be removed to completely remove the tumor, to prevent the tumor from recurring quickly.
" To remove this tumor, we discussed carefully the issue of controlling blood loss during surgery and especially the possibility of heart failure complications because the tumor is too large, so after removal, a lot of blood will be pumped to the heart, the atrium will dilate, which can lead to heart failure. The case was considered very carefully, although there are many challenges, it still needs to be done, " said Dr. Ha Hai Nam.
On the morning of June 26, the surgical team, consisting of gastroenterologists and urologists, performed surgery on the patient.
Doctors said that the surgery had clearly defined advantages and disadvantages. The advantage was that this was the patient's first surgery, the patient was still quite young, had better recovery ability, the tumor's boundaries were still relatively clear compared to the surrounding organ structures, and could be separated from the liver, pancreas, and colon.
The significant difficulty was that the tumor surrounded the right kidney, the right kidney and ureter were completely inside the tumor. Doctors had to carefully dissect each part of the tumor, reaching the area where the tumor contacted the kidney and ureter, forcing them to remove part of the ureter because that part was completely inside the tumor and could not be separated. The patient was transfused with 3 units of blood and had his hemodynamics adjusted.
With careful preparation, the surgical team completely removed the 8kg tumor, preserved the patient's kidney, cut part of the ureter and then successfully reconnected it.
During surgery, the gross morphology of the tumor was liposarcoma, a cancer of the connective tissue, a lipoma.
Currently, the patient's health is gradually stabilizing and the patient is being monitored and cared for at the hospital.
