Tran Le Duc Anh, born in 2000, has just graduated from the Faculty of Medicine with an average score of 8.57/10. With this score, Duc Anh has become the valedictorian of Hanoi Medical University this year. Despite his outstanding achievements, the male student admitted that he had a period of being very self-conscious because his starting point was "much lower" than his classmates. Previously, Duc Anh had failed the entrance exams to 3 specialized schools in a row, including the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences, the High School for the Gifted at the University of Education, and the Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted. Although he was admitted to a "famous" public school, during his time studying there, his scores were always at the bottom of the class. "In grades 10 and 11, there were times when the whole class was excellent students, only I was ranked fair. I thought a lot about disappointing my parents. Luckily, my parents were always there to encourage me, and rarely blamed or pressured me about my grades."

During the "sprint" period of preparing for the high school graduation exam, Duc Anh began to focus on studying. At this time, his grades also began to improve. Having an older brother studying Medicine at Hanoi Medical University, later passing the Obstetrics residency exam and winning a scholarship to study abroad in France, in Duc Anh's eyes, "his brother is very talented". Therefore, the male student always admired and dreamed of being a part of him. In addition, also because of his passion for a character who is a doctor in the comic series Black Jack, Duc Anh decided to enroll in the medical field with the highest wish of Medicine at Hanoi Medical University. This decision of the male student was discouraged by many people because they thought that with his academic ability, "lower-ranked medical schools are still a dream". His mother also advised Duc Anh to choose Economics to be more suitable. Only his father always believed in and encouraged him to study Biology to take the exam to enter Hanoi Medical University. In 2018, Duc Anh took the exam and scored 24.9 points for the B00 block, just enough to pass the medical program with 24.75 points. "At that time, I had just one more multiple choice question to pass the school," Duc Anh recalled. This also made the male student feel inferior when most of his classmates came from specialized schools across the country. Even randomly asking any of his classmates, everyone had some achievements or won national or international awards for excellent students. "I have to admit that at first, I was very scared, I even had to go to the school's website to check how many credits a student would fail to be expelled." Also because of the fear of not being able to keep up and failing subjects, Duc Anh studied very hard in his first year. "Fear became the motivation for me to try much harder," the male student said. Unexpectedly, in the first semester, Duc Anh won the school's encouragement scholarship. Thanks to that, the male student realized that even though his friends had a higher starting point, when they entered the medical profession, everyone started like him. Compared to his high school years, when he was the worst student in the class, Duc Anh realized that he was not smarter, but the biggest change in him was his way of thinking. "Since receiving the scholarship to encourage learning in the first semester, I gradually dared to believe that I could study well. That way of thinking also led to my actions to strive to become better." In the third year, when he started going to the hospital and interacting with patients, Duc Anh always appreciated every clinical lesson because he believed that in addition to knowledge, he was also inspired by the teachers at the hospital such as positivity, energy, modesty and dedication to the profession.

The key to getting high scores before each exam, according to Duc Anh, is not how long you study, but you must have study discipline and always be proactive in synthesizing knowledge. “Medical knowledge is often linked together, if you don’t write it down last year, you will forget it right away. Therefore, I often have data files to summarize the main knowledge into bullet points. Taking notes and how to take notes are also very important to accumulate knowledge. If you don’t write it down, the knowledge will be lost and you will have to study it all over again the next school year, which is very difficult.” In addition, Duc Anh’s secret is to “question a lot” and “always create motivation to strive.” During his 6 years of studying medicine, in addition to studying, the male student still participated in the English club and spent a lot of time on personal hobbies. “When I joined the club, I developed the habit of reading foreign books. In addition, I also played games and learned English based on games.” After graduating as valedictorian of Hanoi Medical University, Duc Anh did not rest but focused on studying for the residency exam in early August. Before that, the male student took the IELTS test and achieved a score of 8.0. With a mother who is a doctor at K Hospital, Duc Anh also wants to pursue a career in oncology like his mother. According to the male student, becoming valedictorian does not give him any other advantage in this exam, but even puts more pressure on him. "In the short term, I want to pass the residency exam and become a good doctor. To achieve that, I need to strive and make a lot more effort," the new valedictorian of Hanoi Medical University shared.
