8th grade boy wins beauty queen crown design contest

GD&TĐ – An 8th grade male student in Binh Duong won the crown design contest for the Miss Universe Vietnam 2024 contest.

Although he has not attended any design training courses, Hoang Xuan Thuyen, an 8th grade student at Dong Chieu Secondary School (Di An City, Binh Duong Province) won the crown design contest for the Miss Universe Vietnam 2024 contest.

The Crown of "Million Dollar Mission"

Nearly a month has passed, but Hoang Xuan Thuyen (from Ha Tinh, currently living in Di An City, Binh Duong) still remembers clearly the moment when the new Miss Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen was crowned Miss Universe Vietnam 2024. Because the crown of the new Miss was designed by Xuan Thuyen.

Thuyen’s work beat out many older competitors in the design competition to be chosen as the winner in the final night. Recalling her feelings at that moment, Xuan Thuyen excitedly said: “I was very happy and proud when my work won. My design is called Million Dollar Mission.”

Previously, when the Miss Universe Vietnam 2024 organizing committee launched a crown design contest for the new beauty queen, Thuyen asked her family for permission to participate and was very supported by her parents. To be able to design this crown, Thuyen followed many announcements, press conferences, and information about the Miss Universe Vietnam 2024 contest to grasp the theme and spirit of the contest.

Notably, this year’s crown is worth around 24 million VND – in contrast to many other beauty pageants that often offer “huge” prices for crowns. Therefore, the crown requires designers to choose appropriate materials.

“During the design and creation process, I have researched and used low-cost materials but still ensured the aesthetics and meaning of my work. Unlike the crowns of Miss Universe Vietnam contests over the years, this year the designer will not be able to use materials such as gold, silver, diamonds, platinum, etc. Instead, I have used a silver-plated frame, amethyst and zircon stones, etc. to create sparkle for the crown,” the “designer” shared.

Designing crowns for major competitions has been a dream that Xuan Thuyen has cherished for the past 2 years. This is the first time he has participated in a major competition, and he admits that this is a rather risky but equally interesting move.

Participating in the competition, knowing that he was the youngest contestant, Xuan Thuyen felt quite surprised and a little worried when having to compete with older and more experienced students. However, this student also determined that the competition was a great experience and also an opportunity to exchange and learn from experience. Of course, Xuan Thuyen was still determined to devote all his efforts to achieve the highest results.

Inspired by the beauty of the homeland

Xuan Thuyen has been "fated" with design since entering 6th grade. At school, he participated in activities such as the Young Creativity Competition, Career Experience, Art Club (Fine Arts and Music) and gradually accumulated experience to create the current crown.

Besides, Thuyen also regularly learns to draw and searches for topics on YouTube. After school, Thuyen spends time practicing drawing, this is also the time when he feels most relaxed. The student comes up with ideas, then sketches on paper, and finally completes the drawing on the iPad.

The male student also said that the crown “Million Dollar Mission” was inspired by the cultural heritage of Vietnam. The details in the crown were combined with familiar images of his homeland, such as: Storks, rice flowers, bamboo trees, rice grains, etc.

This crown was designed by Xuan Thuyen quite quickly, it took only 2 days to complete the drawing and 5 days to complete the model. On the crown there are 11 main stones, in which the largest stone represents the new Miss Universe Vietnam 2024, the remaining 10 stones represent 10 schools that will be built during the new Miss's term; 5 stars represent 5 missions that the new Miss will carry out.

“I love my homeland, my country and the place where I live and study. Therefore, the crown is designed based on the cultural and historical heritage of Vietnam, to honor the good traditions of the nation, connect the present with the past, affirm the values ​​of history and longevity.

According to previous information from the program, the prize for the winning designer includes 24 million VND in cash and a school built in his hometown. I feel happy and proud to have a school built in my hometown Ha Tinh, which will contribute to the glory of this year's crown," Thuyen shared.

In particular, with the name "Million Dollar Power", Xuan Thuyen hopes that the crown will not only be an object to honor the beauty of the new Miss in the final night but will also be a great source of motivation to help her bring better values ​​to the community and society. "I feel happy that the crown has found a worthy owner. In the future, I hope to continue participating in the national costume design contest, improve my skills and learn from the experiences of my seniors", Thuyen said.

Mr. Bui Nam Hai - Xuan Thuyen's homeroom teacher said: "The contest was held during the summer vacation so it did not affect her studies at all. This is also an opportunity for Thuyen to be more confident and learn more things.

I myself have taught this student since grade 6, so I know that he is a very good and polite student, actively participating in school activities. In the new school year, Thuyen was elected as the class monitor. Being a cheerful and active person, Xuan Thuyen is loved by many friends.
