"Memorize" important topics in Geometry and Algebra to conquer the high school graduation exam in Math

Ms. Vu Thi Lan, Math teacher at Dong Da High School, Hanoi, shared an overall "picture" of Math for the high school graduation exam for 12th grade students. She suggested important topics and key topics in Geometry and Algebra.

Difference between old and new program exam

Ms. Vu Thi Lan, a Math teacher at Dong Da High School, said that for the 2006 General Education Program, candidates are familiar with the 50-question objective test format. There are very few practical application questions, the knowledge is mainly in the functions, exponential functions, derivative applications, etc.

Compared with the exam according to the 2018 General Education Program, it can be seen that the new program increases high application and practical application; more practical application questions, diverse in life situations, linked to other fields, integrated with physics, biology, personal finance...

The new program format has 22 questions including:

Part 1: 12 multiple choice questions with 04 options, choose 01 correct answer;

Part 2: 04 questions in multiple choice format True/False. Each question has 04 options, for each option the candidate chooses true or false.

Part 3: 06 questions in multiple choice short answer format. Candidates fill in the boxes corresponding to their answers.

Comparing the trend of knowledge application between the two programs, teacher Vu Thi Lan said:

General Education Program 2006
General Education Program 2018
- Students often learn formulas - practice problem solving techniques - apply them to exam questions.
- Little practical application
- There are quite a few problems containing parameters and implicit functions.
- The test content is mainly in the 12th grade math program.
- The test will tend to be: Related to specific life situations (purchasing, construction, finance, bank interest rates...)
- Require students to read, understand the situation, create mathematical models, solve problems, interpret results, and draw conclusions.
- Math problems will use less quick tricks, instead there will be situations that require deep thinking and understanding the nature of mathematics.
- Students need to shift from "learning to take exams" to "learning to understand - learning to apply".
- Students need to be trained in: Reading comprehension skills (longer, more realistic), situation modeling skills, explaining skills, and arguing mathematical results.
- Few problems containing parameters, few implicit problems.
- The test has high differentiation.
- The test content is mainly in the math program for grades 11 and 12.

Focus on 5 types of knowledge

Teacher Vu Thi Lan suggests that according to the 2018 General Education Program, students need to focus on reviewing types of Math knowledge such as:

First, master the core knowledge in textbooks and solve key problems. Students need to master basic knowledge because the new program aims to "study less but understand deeply and be able to apply".

Second, you also need to focus on application questions, related to reality if you have a good score target. These are the decisive questions to differentiate scores of 8, 9, 10. Know how to identify math problems, have quick and accurate solving methods. Try to do at least 5-10 high application questions every day, take notes on quick solving methods. Pay special attention to questions related to practice, real-life applications in the 2025 illustration test.

Third, practice regularly. First, you must familiarize yourself with the latest reference questions to understand the structure and distribution of question types, avoiding ineffective, rambling learning. Each week, you can do 3-4 questions; note down your mistakes and analyze why you made them to look back and avoid repeating them.

Fourth, use reputable reference books or mock exams from schools, school clusters, and Departments of Education and Training; join in-person and online study groups to update more good and effective solutions. Actively ask questions and discuss with teachers and friends to accumulate knowledge...

Fifth, refer to other textbooks to have more perspectives on the same problem.

The new program requires students to understand the nature and know how to apply it. Therefore, review needs to shift from practicing solving techniques to training thinking ability and practical application.

Some points to note in the Geometry and Algebra section

Teacher Lan suggests that candidates need to have a firm grasp of key topics. Specifically, students should focus on reviewing the most important topics such as:

- Functions and applications: variation, function graphs, extreme values, asymptote, maximum value, minimum value of a function

- Application of derivatives and function surveys to solve some practical problems...

- Exponential and logarithmic equations, exponential and logarithmic inequalities, simplification, expression transformation...

- Antiderivatives - integrations: pay special attention to basic forms of integration, application of integration in geometry, calculation of area of plane shapes, volume of rotating objects, application of integration to practical problems

- Statistics: concepts such as range, interquartile range, mode, mean, variance, standard deviation and significance.

- Probability – Statistics: classical probability, especially the new knowledge introduced into the 12th grade math program, are problems related to conditional probability, total probability and Bayes formula. This year, you should focus on studying the probability part carefully. This part seems difficult at first, but if you focus on studying carefully, you will conquer it.

- Oxyz space geometry: Vectors in space, coordinate expressions, equations of planes, lines, spheres.

The test contains a lot of practical math, both true and false and fill-in-the-blank. To master practical math problems, you must have a firm grasp of core knowledge, basic knowledge, and do many practical math problems during your review.

Conquer the Math test according to your ability

To conquer the math test according to their ability, students need to be calm, read the questions carefully, prioritize solving easy questions first, and utilize the skills of elimination - estimation - testing answers.

According to Ms. Lan, with multiple choice tests, it is not necessary to solve them completely. You can estimate the results; try the answers on the test; and eliminate clearly incorrect options.

For uncertain questions, students should mark them to come back to (if there is time left. Avoid spending too much time on one question, as it will affect your mentality and time for the following questions. If you cannot finish them all, choose a random answer instead of leaving it blank.

"To conquer practical math problems, you must have a firm grasp of core knowledge, basic knowledge and do many practical math problems during the review process," teacher Vu Thi Lan shared.

Take advantage of your drawing – illustration – tabulation skills, with difficult geometry problems, you can draw precise shapes to predict the results.

Always stay calm when you encounter a difficult question. Then reread the question, dissecting each fact. You should ask yourself "What is the question asking? What knowledge is it related to?". At the same time, write down what you know - analyze each small step, if you still can't figure it out, move on to another question - keep your mind calm.

Practice allocating time reasonably for the three parts of the test structure when practicing so that when you enter the test room you can estimate how much time you need for each part.

Practice using Casio calculator proficiently, remember function keys to save time.

After finishing, check carefully and optimize your score by reviewing easy and medium questions to avoid unfortunate mistakes.

During this urgent review period, teacher Vu Thi Lan shared that first, students should set specific goals, such as how many points they want to achieve, and note that no matter what the goal is, they must focus on basic knowledge first, then gradually improve. Clear goals will help students orient their learning process.

Create a conducive study environment: Make sure you have a quiet study environment, free from noise or other distractions. Give yourself a private space to focus on your revision.

Share and seek support when needed: If you feel stressed or anxious, you should share with friends, family or teachers to receive encouragement and support. This helps reduce pressure and increase confidence.

Take mock exams in a reasonable way: Mock exams help students get used to the time pressure and exam format. However, you should not take too many mock exams to avoid creating more stress and affecting your psychology.

Teacher Vu Thi Lan, a Math teacher at Dong Da High School, has just won first prize at the conference to evaluate the results of the city's excellent high school teacher competition for the 2024-2025 school year in early April.
