The US State Department said on August 14 that Washington had reports of an American citizen being detained in Russia and was working to get as much information as possible.
Speaking at a press conference, US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel emphasized: "We are aware of reports regarding another US citizen being detained in Russia and we are working to get as much information as possible, working to determine the consular situation and see if consular access is possible."
According to a Telegram channel that monitors the activities of courts in the Russian capital, the Moscow City Court on August 13 sentenced American citizen Joseph Tater to 15 days in prison for minor hooliganism.
Also at the press conference, Mr. Vedant Patel said the US government praised Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio's contributions to bilateral cooperation between Washington and Tokyo in many areas to "a higher level".
Responding to the press conference, Mr. Vedant Patel shared: "He (Kishida) is a great friend of the United States and we deeply appreciate his steadfast partnership as well as his visionary leadership... Under his leadership, the Japan-US alliance has been taken to a higher level."
Spokesperson Patel also expressed that Washington was "very proud" to work with Prime Minister Kishida within the framework of the Group of Seven (G7) as well as on issues surrounding Russia's war against Ukraine.
On August 14, Prime Minister Kishida abruptly announced that he would not seek re-election as president of his ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), meaning he would not continue as Prime Minister after next month's leadership vote.
