The White House announced a $300 million emergency military aid package for Ukraine, including anti-aircraft missiles and artillery shells.
On behalf of President Biden, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan announced "an emergency security assistance package and a shipment of weapons and equipment worth $300 million to address some of Ukraine's urgent needs." According to Mr. Sullivan, "time is running out and we need to act as quickly as possible."
Major General Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman, said the shipment will include FIM-92 Stinger air defense missiles, rockets for the HIMARS artillery system, 155mm and 105mm artillery shells, AT4 anti-tank guns, ammunition for individual weapons, supplies for the obstacle destruction system, spare parts and other auxiliary equipment.
The announcement comes as Ukraine is running out of ammunition at a dangerous level. A $60 billion aid proposal for Kiev has been stuck in the US Congress for months as Republicans and Democrats have yet to reach a consensus. Observers say this is a small aid package that will help Ukraine quench its "thirst" for ammunition in a short time.
