The New York Times , citing private sources, said that American officials were angry that Israel had carried out an attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria without consulting Washington first, and that Israel had sent an uninformed notice to the United States.

Also according to the New York Times , publicly US officials expressed support for Israel, but privately they were angry that Israel acted without restraint towards Iran without consulting Washington.

The source added that US officials felt placed in a "difficult position" and that they were unaware of important actions by close ally Israel, while Iran, a long-time rival, announced its intention to retaliate against Israel in advance.

Not only did Israel wait until the last minute to inform Washington of its plans, but it also gave the US “relatively low-level notice” after the attack in Syria, according to US officials. The Americans were also not told how sensitive the Syrian target would be, even though the attack had been planned for two months in advance.

The report said Israel's planning for the attack on Syria began in March and the target was Mohammad Reza Zahedi, commander of the Quds special forces in charge of Syria and Lebanon - a branch of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

On March 22, according to internal Israeli defense records, the Israeli war cabinet approved the operation. On April 1, Israel carried out an airstrike on an Iranian embassy building in Damascus, completely destroying the target. The IRGC said seven members of its force were killed in the attack, including two commanders. By April 2, the Syrian Ministry of Health said the attack had killed four Syrians and wounded 13 others.

According to the New York Times , Israel has admitted to "underestimating the impact of the attack". Many US officials also said that Israeli officials "seriously miscalculated in assuming that Iran would not respond strongly".

Last weekend, the IRGC launched more than 300 drones and missiles at Israel in its first direct attack on Israeli territory, according to data from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said Israel intercepted 99 percent of the aerial targets fired by Iran, including all drones.
