According to Reuters, the list of exempted items was announced by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) late on April 11 (local time).
The agency has listed about 20 products.
A variety of electronics items are on the list, including smartphones and many components imported into the US from China (which is currently subject to a 145% US tariff).
Semiconductors are also exempt from the 10% basic tariff (which applies to most US trading partners). Solar panels, TV screens, flash drives, memory cards, etc.
CNBC commented that the exemption is a victory for technology companies like Apple, which manufactures the majority of its products in China. According to Evercore ISI, the country produces 80% of iPads and more than half of Mac computers.
The Trump administration’s reciprocal tariff exemptions on electronics will also help ease the cost impact on American consumers when they buy popular high-tech products.
On April 9, President Trump announced that he would suspend reciprocal tariffs for 90 days on more than 75 countries/territories that have not retaliated against the US, except for China. China is currently subject to tariffs of up to 145%.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that within 90 days, these countries will all be subject to a 10% tariff. The Trump administration is negotiating with them.
Since last November, when Mr. Trump was elected US president, the world's leading electronics brands have continuously asked suppliers in Asia to speed up production and boost exports of smartphones, laptops... to the US.
Efforts to avoid high tariffs have been pushed to a higher, even more chaotic level, when Mr. Trump suddenly dropped a reciprocal tariff bomb on global trade.
Before Trump’s reciprocal tariffs on dozens of countries took effect on April 9, companies like Apple, Dell, Microsoft and Lenovo urgently urged suppliers to ship as many high-end devices to the US as possible, especially computers priced above $3,000, according to Nikkei Asia magazine.
CNN quoted Wedbush Securities' estimate that about 90% of Apple's iPhone production and assembly activities are carried out in China.
