On the morning of April 10, the business community received good news when US President Donald Trump announced a 90-day postponement of reciprocal tariffs on other countries, bringing the tax rate down to 10%, opening up opportunities for negotiations with other countries.

Applying 10% tax, Vietnamese goods still have many advantages

Informing Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Nguyen Duc Thang - CEO of Dap Cau Garment Corporation - a unit with 90-95% of garment products exported to the US - shared that receiving the good news has helped businesses "breathe easier" and no longer "suffocated" like a few days ago.

Since the US announced and implemented the tax on April 9 without any changes, many buyers have announced that they will suspend their orders and switch to buying from Indonesia and India.

"Early this morning, orders started coming back and we closed the deal. Because with the 10% tax, we still have an advantage over other competitors like Cambodia and Bangladesh, not only the tax rate is beneficial but also many of our competitors cannot make the same products as us.

"With quality, delivery progress, compliance with processes, procedures and regulations with buyers, Vietnamese textiles are still trusted by buyers. The business community highly appreciates the efforts of the Party, Government and the working delegation to the US to negotiate with flexible strategies that bring benefits to the people and businesses," Mr. Thang shared.

Mr. Thang expressed that although negotiations are still needed in the coming time, businesses believe in the leadership and diplomatic efforts of the Party and Government, and expect to reach a better agreement with the US with the most preferential tax rates in trade relations.

Take advantage of the golden time to adjust your strategy

Representing the business community, Mr. Mac Quoc Anh - permanent vice president of the Hanoi Association of Small and Medium Enterprises - said that businesses received the above information with a "temporary sense of relief".

By postponing the imposition of reciprocal taxes, businesses will not incur additional cost burdens and will not immediately disrupt their business plans.

However, many businesses are still cautious, because "postponement" does not mean "complete cancellation" - future risks are still hidden.

"Temporarily easing tensions does not mean things are easy. The temporary suspension of reciprocal tariffs gives businesses "golden time" to prepare and adjust their strategies. Businesses clearly understand that the risk of trade defense has not ended, so they continue to expect timely support from authorities and strengthen their internal resources to be ready to respond when risks continue," Mr. Anh said.

Mr. Anh also said he hopes that all levels and sectors will promptly update official information when there are changes in policies so that businesses have enough time to prepare; and have a channel to consult and answer questions for businesses related to taxes.
